Taipan Taipan Vet 2 700mm in .22 (Hype is real)

First Impressions of My Taipan Veteran!

I recently purchased a Taipan Veteran from zx10wall (Derrick @ Tenacious Airguns). It’s a used unit but in excellent condition and tuned to shoot H&N HP II .218 (25gr) slugs at 950 fps. I paired it with a Vector Optics Veyron 6-24x44 (FFP) MPR-V5 reticle, and I couldn’t be happier with the results!

Highlights:

  1. No Reg Creep!
Unlike some other brands (not naming names here, but I own one... 😂), the Taipan is rock-solid. After sitting overnight, I took three shots over the chronograph: 948 fps, 950 fps, 949 fps. That level of consistency inspires total confidence.
  2. Free-Floating Barrel = No POI Shift!
The free-floating barrel is solid as a rock. I did a bump test to check for point-of-impact (POI) shifts—nothing moved! This rifle hits exactly where I aim. With H&N .22 slugs, the accuracy is phenomenal. Zeroed at 40 yards, I’m shooting consistent 1/4-inch groups from a rest. It’s like a laser beam!
  3. Exceptional Trigger!
Many bullpups suffer from sloppy triggers due to their linkage systems, but not the Taipan. The trigger is light, crisp, and precise, which makes accurate shooting a breeze.

My PCP Journey:

  • My first PCP (about 1.5 years ago) was a Daystate Air Ranger in .25 cal. It had a fantastic trigger but poor shot count because it was an unregulated rifle. Unfortunately, it had a shot string that started at 950fps and would go down, meaning there was no sweet spot under the curve. So I got rid of it.
  • Then I upgraded to a FX Wildcat MK3 BT (.30 cal). It’s a powerhouse—accurate and capable, shooting JSB 44.75gr pellets at 895 fps. However, it can be finicky. Despite its carbon fiber liner, the barrel suffers from horizontal POI shifts if leaned against a wall for a couple of hours. To prevent this, I store it on a shooting rest and have no issues with POI shifts.
Now that I’ve tried the Taipan, I understand what true build quality feels like. It’s incredibly well-made, consistent, and dependable. I wish I had purchased one as my first PCP, but hey, no regrets—I’ve learned a lot along the way!

If you’re considering a bullpup PCP, the Taipan Veteran should be at the top of your list. It’s truly in a league of its own.

P.S. Derrick Wall (@zx10wall ) is a truly standup guy and an asset to the AG community! Thanks Derrick for the excellent communication and service

I was thiiiiis close to reach I’m out to Derrick to pull the trigger on this one multiple times, but then I remembered that I want a U3 even more. Nevertheless wondered who was the lucky one to get it :) Enjoy it (and hit me up if you ever want to get rid of it ;)).
Haha thanks, I certainly feel lucky! If and when I get tired of this you will be first to know!

How does the side lever cocking compare to your other guns?
My FX Wildcat side lever is really good and smooth in operation . A solid 8/10 but it does not feel as robust as the Taipan. However, the Taipan’s side lever is more solid and robust and feels really smooth to operate. I think the ability to move it right or left is something special too unlike my FX

Thanks! It is such a pleasure to shoot this thing. I am already pushing 50fpe with .22 slugs and am certain your rifles in .25 are a beast of a platform.
Yes with the JSB knockout slugs
I'm pushing 943 fps. And it's really accurate. I had it up to 990s but accuracy is better at 943 fps. It also really liked the JSB Heavy 33.95 mk2s

looks like the the custom built veteran with the 700mm barrel that I ordered from Tony @ Talonairguns last week, I really never heard any bad things about Taipans and they seem like tack drivers, have awesome triggers, etc..just never understood why nobody ever shoots these beautiful rifles in competitions like RMAC, Pyramid Air cup etc.... maybe because its a bull pup? plan on shooting slugs only in mine and giving NRL22 a try with it this summer.

Yes a "Pup" is inherently more difficult to stabilize than a Long Gun ... thus for ultimate accuracy potential anyone is the know would not choose a Pup for such competitions.

I agree that for most part a short bullpup is harder to group with . But the pros don't seem to have a problem with them . I like them for hunting and pesting myself over a long rifle. I would always hit the barrels of my rifles against something accidentally after using bullpups for a while.

I always wondered why no Hubans . The rifle should be dialed in by now . Sounds like the pistol is getting closer v3+ . But I've never seen even 50 yards groups that wowed me .

The Taipans could be used more on club levels without sponsorship. I know I've read of guys using them for FT . I don't think I've ever read of a Huben being used for field target and that seems odd to me . Someone must be using the pistol , unless no S/As allowed . I know some guys really like them and that's great their having fun .

It's nice to see a Cricket .30 up there . The Czechs make some excellent airguns and PBs .
