Taipan Vet Long .25 shot string --- after belville washer polish

Silicone lube removed from washers and back in business.

40 shots, ES = 7 (this will do!)
50 shots ES = 13
60 shots ES = 23 (still hunting at 60th shot, no problem)

Regulator set at 110 bar I am pretty sure. I wish I had NOT ordered the Huma!!!

I believe the ES can be sub 5 over 40 shots if I had actually 'polished' the washers in addition to burr removal with 600 grit wet paper. I believe the reg should be lowered another 5 or 10 bar and the hammer strike increased. It's a LOOOONG ways from 140 bar dealer / factory setting!

Next time and for now it's a great ES for target and fur.

Hey Johnny, this is an informative post. First time I had read about anyone smoothing and de-buring the washers. A couple questions that come to mind. Is the report any noticeably quieter since it uses less? And do you notice any accuracy change. I am sure its more efficient with air.

thanks

I wanted to get as many shots at around 915fps because that's where the JSB / FX 25.4 grain are most accurate in this rifle. No change in report. I also wanted more shots per fill. The accuracy has always been good with this rifle shooting USA quarter-sized 5-shots groups at 60 yards when the wind cooperates. Even better when the wind completely stops, not often.

Great job. Like said, once things are polished nicely, you need not worry about galling. Silicone grease (Super Lube) will work nicely.

I wish I had your post to consider before removing the silicone. I have the regulator adjustment whittled down to sub 20 minutes at this point.

The de-burr can easily go horribly wrong and I don't advise it to most people.

Did about the same to my Cricket .22 last year with about the same result. And for some reason, the hammer, spring and the hole in the breech block had some rusty crap all over. So I polished that all up and reassembled the hammer dry. Way different gun. :)

Nice work. A success story with a little bit of elbow grease.

On the other hand, Huma suggest silicone oil .Heavy, but lighter than the grease. In fact, that is what Huma sells. The belleville veils do not rub together much other than most of the edges. "The inside opening the shaft goes thru is where polishing really counts. I do it all though. I use 1000 cst RC Shock oil, or super lube Grease. Krytox 205 or 206 is fine to, but very expensive. And yes, they do see high pressure. Mine is set at 3000 psi. and the reg. I use is designed for it.

The flash point is very low on motor oil. 😉 It can get hot in there if filled too fast. The heat can damage the nylon seat as well. For high pressures, peek makes a very good seat material. But hard to seal. It has to be perfect.

They are NOT lock washers but Belleville springs. Not lock washers. Totally different animal. Also known as cup springs, conical spring washers, cone springs and a few other names.

Knife

Knife,

the reason I called them them lock washers is they are used to maintain a load on a bolted connection. I use 1/2" Belville washers made by now made by Solon everyday for electrical connections. I have installed thousands upon thousands. You can probably remember when they used them on automobile front end parts way back when. Are they technically a lock washer? They maintain pressure on parts. I could have chosen the wrong word. Here is an interesting application in this picture. These springs are loaded or cocked by a hydraulic mech. to maintain stored energy to operate a ABB power circuit breaker. They are 30+ " in diameter. I am not an expert on these air guns for sure. And will rely on your experience at times.

Hi guys

Impressive ES, hats off to all that research and hard work

Being more a shooter than tuner one small statement.

No experience with that make of airgun but do have with that pellet.

So pretty well everyone says the JSB 25.39 grain 0.25 calibre is most accurate at 830 fps . These are guys who shoot tight groups at 100 yards. Most say higher speeds excess of say 870 fps reduce accuracy.

Comments are most welcome,

Apology not wishing to high jack your post.

safe shooting

We have both done lots of reading and arrived at different conclusions regarding FPS for that pellet. After all of the reading I am only left with the reality of what my groups look like on paper and 900+ is doing well. Forget about a 100 yards and some guy's lucky no wind day!

Whether the ES is 10 or 25 the ground squirrels are indifferent. Most of my shots, the ones I like best, are sub 50yards and those ES mean almost nothing to POI.

This polishing and measuring was fun. This morning I opened it again, re-lubed with silicone, turned the reg down to somewhere between 95 and 100 bar ended up with an ES of 10 over 52 shots.

All this back and forth on lube for belville springs brought me back to common sense... O-RINGS LIKE SILICONE and therefore use silicone when near them.

Exactly!

Thank You Sir and happy shooting to you. TODAY I am gonna shoot it at GS instead of a piece of firewood and writing down numbers.

VERY expensive way to split firewood!
