Taipan taipan veteran 2 for benchrest

I am looking at the Taipan Veteran 2 700mm 22 for strictly for benchrest, 50 to 75 yards. I see great videos, "out of box" that show great accuracy. Has anyone shot benchrest and done well with a Taipan Veteran 2? What kind of accuracy can one expect? Are the videos believable?
For what it’s worth, I haven’t done much target/benchrest shooting with mine, but headshots on squirrels at all your expected ranges are very easy, as long as I don’t introduce a shooter issue (pull a shot etc). It’s as accurate as any rifle I’ve ever shot -air or powder burning. There’s always some variation between individual guns, but I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Perry, I’ve had a few first Gen .22 Vets of different lengths and all were fantastic shooters. Sorry but I don’t have any experience with Gen 2’s but I would expect they are as accurate as seen in the videos. oddly the 2 compacts I had were as accurate as the Std and long versions I had too, all shooting 18s.

Personally I think they made a visual fail with the Gen 2 bottle versions aesthetics. It just looks like a last minute add on to appeal to some shooters wanting more shots. No doubt it’s functional but fugly looking to my 👀 s

I’m guilty of being one of those guys wanting “more shots.” After playing with marauders I was craving something that would put 80-100 shots down range….oddly enough my marauder was modded out to the point I can get 60+ before falling off the regulator, but I have to say I really enjoy the side lever on the taipan. I added one to my marauder, and it’s nice, but I can’t say it’s as smooth or easy as the taipans.

The slug ability is something I have really enjoyed as well. I haven’t gotten into any of the crazy heavy ones yet, but that’s in the plans.

Be forewarned that the advertised barrel may not be exactly what you get. I was under the impression I was getting a polygon barrel in mine(veteran 2 tactical long), upon inspection it has standard rifling. No effect on the accuracy , just not what I thought I was getting.

Hi Perry,

I mostly benchrest shoot and have a Taipan Vet 2 with the 550mm CZ barrel.

I bought it off AGN in close to new condition. The original owner replaced the stock regulator with a Huma reg set at 150bar. Nothing wrong with stock reg - original owner informed he just likes Humas in all his rifles.

I’ve recently started shooting 25.39g JSB MRDs with my Vet2. I’m getting excellent results at 40 yards with them at 860-865fps. (10-ring is .125”).

I’m getting easily 45-50 shots shooting from 250bar down to reg pressure.

You can get the tube version with the 700mm barrel - if you want to explore higher velocities while maintaining a good shot count - without going to bottle versions of Vet 2.

The rifle is nice and heavy, which I like on the bench. It is easy to single shot load. Magazines are also excellent as they are not spring loaded - so no pellet deformation due to spring pressure.

The Vet 2 is built extremely well and is silky smooth to operate. That is in comparison to 15 PCPs I own - mostly high end including Daystate, FX, RTI, Weihrauch, etc.

I’m very happy with my Taipan Veteran 2 as a bench gun. If your use case will be 75+ yards with pellets, you may want to go with the .25 over the .22. I don’t shoot slugs so can’t provide any input on that topic.

LOL, Thanks - yep I precision target shoot off a flexible plastic “table” mounted to tripod legs while sitting in a rickety old steel chair that is not level - and with multiple towels and cushions stacked on it…

… it adds to the challenge of keeping those crosshairs still on the 45X Sightron 😉

I bought a custom vet 2 standard .22 off of Tony from talon about little over a month ago let me tell ya this thing is a laser beam! This is my first Taipan and I don’t know why I waited this long to get one, it’s one of the custom made rifles by Tony with the 700mm CZ barrel, powerful plenum and power springer. I bought it strictly for slugs and this thing throws javelin 23gr slugs and I have it tuned to sling these out the pipe at 1000fps, I shoot off of a bench on my back porch at ranges 35yds-75yds and it’s a laser beam, I mainly use the rifle for pesting and let me tell ya when that slug hits a English sparrow with 50fpe the pop of the bird is louder than the rifle lol so ya go for it getting one you won’t be disappointed, the only downfall I would say is that I only get like 25 shots with this tune before it falls of the reg. I’m saving up to get another one from Tony and probably putting up some of my other rifles for sale that I said I would never sell, I love Taipans now.. ❤️😊👍

I'm shooting .22 25.39 pellets at 893 for about 60 shots. It's likely that the regulator is set fairly low and the HS is right at or past the knee.
Mine is 550mm, no power plenum but was well past the knee when I got it and loud, plus wasting lots of air.
If I wanted more power on this low power version, I would bring the reg up about 10 bar and the HS a bit too to get 950fps.
Point is that 25 shots is way too few shots with that rig.

Never messed with the reg I think they are set at the factory to 135 but not 💯 sure, I’ll have to text Tony. The card it came with from talon said it was shooting 23g @ 930fps, all I did was turn the hammer spring in a little to achieve the 1000fps, there is lots of room on the adjuster yet and it isn’t hard to cock, the accuracy I am getting, pretty much hole in hole at 40yds and like quarter sized groups at 75yds so I’m not messing with the reg, I can deal with the low shot count of 25 or so, the rifle isn’t used for nonstop 500 round bench rest shooting it’s used for hunting/pesting so 25 shots is plenty for me, I’m by no means a pcp expert either, would the 75cc power plenum and the power springer be the culprit for more air use? I did turn the hammer spring down to try the Altaros slugs took it down to 880-890fps like suggested on here but the accuracy wasn’t as good, I did probably get like 35 shots at that speed, I tried a bunch of different slugs and speeds but found the 23gr javelin gen 2’s to perform the best, started testing them at 880-1050fps and got the best accuracy from 1000fps so that’s where I’m leaving it at…

Yes, I’m going to guess that you have the Taipan Vet 2 “Custom LR” (Long Range) rifle that Tony sells. It is the 700mm tube version with a stiffer hammer spring and high power tune for slug shooting.

Tony also sells the standard factory version of the Vet 2 tube with 700mm barrel. This is the Taipan factory version with standard factory hammer spring.

Edit: Added pictures and description of custom Long Range as it might help folks realize the difference and pick the correct one for their purposes…
