Ok so here's some comparisons:

20250220_205439.jpg

Weights as shown in pic minus the mags and arca adapter on Vet1. Vet1 was 10lbs 12oz. Vet2 10lbs 8oz. Bare weight of Vet2 is 8lbs 8oz.

Length Vet1 is 31 5/8" and Vet2 is 32"

No shooting tonight. 30* and foggy and I broke a fever after work so don't feel like shooting in the cold. Got scope mounted and leveled so it'll be good to go when I feel up to it.

One thing to note, the whole scope rail is free floating along with the barrel. Barrel is screwed into the breech, the scope rail slides over the barrel and is attached by 4 screws on the breech. Slide the small metal sleeve on and tighten the shroud to tension the barrel. It's a very clever design as the barrel and scope rail are one and can't really be moved separately as say a rigid mount scope rail would be.

Quick 50yd shoot this morning. Still foggy but still tried. Loves the 20.8gr Monster Lights. 7 shots
20250221_070625.jpg

5 shots AEA 21.9gr. Not great but maybe playing with speed can improve. We'll see.
20250221_070629.jpg

JSB Knockout MK2. I know they are going slow but wanted to try them. Will play with higher speeds once the weather improves.

Yeah, sure is.

Those JSB 20.83g lights also shoot very accurately for me with my FX Royale .22 at 50y. Hard to beat.

Not a Taipan I know, but it seems to be a good pellet weight between the 18.1g and MRD 25.39g in a lot of .22 air rifles.

Dillon, will be interesting to see if the slugs you try/test can get that tight too after you mess around with different velocities. Q. What pellets did Tony include in his test group with the rifle?

Yeah I'm really happy with how they are shooting. Thanks!

Yeah I've been really wanting something in that weight range. Haven't had the best luck with the 22gr JTS or AEA. These seem very good. I will be getting more for sure. I might be testing slugs and speed soon weather dependant. Pellets were the 21.9gr AEA at 900fps that Tony tested at 30yds. Tight group there. But I can see spiraling from them at longer range. In my Vet1 Long they aren't as accurate either at longer range. They don't spiral like out of this one but nonetheless not as good.

So speed was 915fps with 20.83gr pellets. Maxed out HS is 930fps. I would need the stronger spring to increase FPS or add shims. Monster Lights are definitely winners right now. The KO MK2s and AEA JTS 22gr aren't looking great. Not sure where all my other slugs went but can't find any. Will need to order more to try some. Probably H&Ns. Weird thing though the Slugs were only going 795fps. That's a massive loss from a 22gr pellet at 915fps. There .217 so either too small and getting blow by or too big. My guess would be too small. I'll probably pull the barrel and slug it and see what I'm working with.

You know, there is nothing wrong with just staying with the Lights for a few weeks. Why rock the boat with endless slug testing? It’s a brand new rifle and you already proved it shoots fantastic at 50y.

915 FPS for 20.83g ( especially with that one ragged hole 50y group ) is all the power you need for pesting at your preferred distance ranges.

Don’t get me wrong, have a blast testing lots of pellets and slug weights . But, that can be time consuming and with a young family, work and farm duties; enjoy the out of box stellar accuracy with the Lights.

Great gun!,

I’ve posted many great results with 25.4g MRDs with my Taipan Vet 2 .22 550mm…

… remember that the original owner I purchased from installed a Huma reg set at 150bar. He gave me the original Taipan reg - nothing wrong with it, he just preferred Humas. I believe Taipan sets their factory regs at 135bar.

So, if you want to shoot heavier pellets than the MRD Lights, you may have to bump reg pressure to about 150bar.

You make a very good point and I do agree with you. I don't think I'll really chase the slug craze. I'm very happy with the Monster Lights and will likely stick with them. I wanted to shoot a heavier pellet with a better BC than the 18gr. These have that. You are also right I don't have very much time. About to have less very shortly with our 3rd child due in a few weeks. I do think I want to pull the barrel and just see the specs on it but yeah won't chase the slugs very much. But will probably try a few light ones just to see but no extensive testing.

Oh that's good info! I didn't realize he had raised the regulator. Makes sense why your pushing 44fpe with it then. I don't really need any more power than the 40fpe I'm shooting at. Just wanted something better than the 18gr BC wise. Not a fan of MRDs for the long range fliers which is what this gun will be used is long range pesting. So the Lights are looking like my best bet unless I can find a light slug. I had very good results with VK XLHP 22gr slugs in my Long. Maybe I'll order some more for this gun. Would fit it much better I'd assume.

To remove the barrel is actually very easy. Unthread the moderator, pull off the little sleeve and loosen barrel. 30 secs. And it's a threaded into reciever barrel that's tensioned. Really enjoying the little "upgrades" over the Vet1. Still love the Vet1 but the more I see what they did with the Vet2 I am impressed. Anyways will probably pull the barrel to clean it as it's very easy and don't need to mess with the pull through and the magazine opening.

Will get info on slugging the barrel in the morning.

Yeah, original owner told me the Huma was set at 150bar and that’s exactly where it falls off the reg - so he did a good job.

With the 550 unchoked CZ barrel, mine makes crazy power at 150 reg pressure. I can push 28g Grands to at least 900 - and it lasers them at 40-50 yards.

I was gonna detune it - maybe even put the stock reg back in…. but then I reduced hammer spring and tried shooting the MRD 25.4g at 860fps - and you saw I was getting 1 hole at 47 yards in the wind. At that velocity, I get 45+ shots with the tube Vet2, so I’m gonna leave it for now - its really quiet too with this tune - so I can target shoot with it.

Just a great platform. Super short like an RTI Prophet, with plenty of power and built very solid. I just don’t see the advantage of my full length rifles (Crown, Wolverine, etc) if you are using a scope - compact air rifles like the Vet2 are just as accurate and powerful.

I would get fliers with the JSB 25.4s also but the JTS or AEAs have done much better for me in my Mav . I tried the Hades monster 25.39gr pellets and the were looking good at first but then opened up so I went back to the 25.3gr AEAs . I would stick with the lighter stuff that your vet 2 likes instead of cranking it up . My Vet 1 loves the 18s and 16gr Hades , didn't do bad with the 16gr Polymags at 50y . Haven't tested them at long range though.
