Taipan Taipan Veteran 2 Tactical 550mm .22

Yeah, original owner told me the Huma was set at 150bar and that’s exactly where it falls off the reg - so he did a good job.

With the 550 unchoked CZ barrel, mine makes crazy power at 150 reg pressure. I can push 28g Grands to at least 900 - and it lasers them at 40-50 yards.

I was gonna detune it - maybe even put the stock reg back in…. but then I reduced hammer spring and tried shooting the MRD 25.4g at 860fps - and you saw I was getting 1 hole at 47 yards in the wind. At that velocity, I get 45+ shots with the tube Vet2, so I’m gonna leave it for now - its really quiet too with this tune - so I can target shoot with it.

Just a great platform. Super short like an RTI Prophet, with plenty of power and built very solid. I just don’t see the advantage of my full length rifles (Crown, Wolverine, etc) if you are using a scope - compact air rifles like the Vet2 are just as accurate and powerful.
Yeah that is a good bump in power. Also my chrony time was at 35* so likely had some loss of fps from that. I'm very happy where it is power wise for now and it just is a laser with the lights. I'll be sticking with them for now. That's great shot count from a tube at that power.

I have a hard time going with a gun over 32" as i use them in my truck alot so for full power guns I always go bullpup. Hard to beat the Taipan brand.

I would get fliers with the JSB 25.4s also but the JTS or AEAs have done much better for me in my Mav . I tried the Hades monster 25.39gr pellets and the were looking good at first but then opened up so I went back to the 25.3gr AEAs . I would stick with the lighter stuff that your vet 2 likes instead of cranking it up . My Vet 1 loves the 18s and 16gr Hades , didn't do bad with the 16gr Polymags at 50y . Haven't tested them at long range though.
Yeah I could try the RD monsters but ideally don't want to go that high in power. I'm very happy with how this is shooting at 920fps with the 20.8gr Lights. My Long loves the JTS 18gr at 920fps. So it's a decent bump in power. And an increase in BC. Simply what I wanted.

What pressure is the regulator set at on your Veteran 1 Long? I bought my Long almost 5 years ago and the reg on that was set at 145 bars and it was shooting the 18.13gr at 1,000 FPS out of the box. I think the more recent Veteran 1's (I'm guessing the past 2 years), Taipan has started setting the stock regs lower to 135 bars on most of their guns.

Checking by barrel it seems it's at .2145 and .2175. The slugs are an incredibly tight fit to get in the bore which seems to me that they are alot larger than .217 than what they are supposed to be. Pushing the Monster Lights through is much easier. Barrel is very nice and smooth through the whole length. Trying to figure out what hold it likes earlier, which is a lighter hold than my Vet1, I shot a 5 shot group measuring .32" and a 10 shot group around .6" at 50yds. Very happy with how it's shooting so far.

Quick 50yd shoot this morning. Still foggy but still tried. Loves the 20.8gr Monster Lights. 7 shots View attachment 540647
5 shots AEA 21.9gr. Not great but maybe playing with speed can improve. We'll see.

JSB Knockout MK2. I know they are going slow but wanted to try them. Will play with higher speeds once the weather improves.View attachment 540648
Wow, those lights are IMPRESSIVE! Good shooting on your part too Dillon.

Just by looking at the barrel and scope mounting above it, I find that strange. One would think it’s very whippy and droopy compared the the Vet 1s rigidity.

I'm not 100% on that. I wanna say 135bar but could be wrong. I do know I had a .25 standard and .22 Long before and swapped the reg and spring from the .25 onto the .22 and it was a significant jump in power. I'll have to dig through my old posts as I did post about it. I want to say I don't think my Long could push the power as much as this Vet2 I feel like I maxed at 890fps with the 22gr and these I'm pushing 920fps max with the 22gr and its cold so id assume in warmer weather could be even higher. Of course I can use a stronger spring and get more I'm sure but how much I'm not sure.

You would think so but it's not floppy. The tensioning of the barrel makes quite a difference. Like said it's definitely a different design I can't say I've seen before but from what I can tell it seems to work just fine.

You might want to try some 17.5 NSAs . This is what my Vet standard does at 50y with them . Some 5 and 10 shot groups most stayed around a quarter in size. Power wise I was around 32-34 fpe . Pellets are superior but the NSAs are the only slugs I have tried . Your Vet 2 would probably do better .

Yeah I think I will try some NSAs. I'm not sure what happened I had a box of 20.2gr, I think some 17.5gr, some 21gr H&Ns, and then I did use a pack of VK XLHPs all up as they did pretty well in my Long. But I can't find my other slugs anywhere which is frustrating.

Ok so I have discovered why my gun shot the Mk2 JSBs so slow. And why they were damn hard to push through the barrel. The body of the slug is .2175 which isn't bad and the outer diameter of my barrel, however the skirt on them are a whopping .226. And it's not just a small flare but a decent amount of it. No wonder why the drag. Also notices the tin said .216 on them when I'm pretty sure when ordered they said .217 online. Who knows but won't be buying these slugs again.

Had a $50 gift card that is a debit card so only works on something under $50. Been annoying but I've been wanting to find something to use it on. I ordered 300 VK XLHP 22gr slugs as they did extremely well in my Taipan Long. Hoping with the extra power of this one and similar barrel specs it should be good.

This took me an annoyingly long time to find. I remember in the past having a .22 Long and .25 Standard. Did this back in 2018. Just for fun I swapped the reg from the .25 and the HS to the .22 Long. Took the gun from a 42fpe gun to a 50fpe gun. 54.5fpe if you look at the JSB beasts. Reason for me wanting to find it as i am thinking about shimming my HS to see where my gun plateaus at on the reg setting.

So I have ordered some slugs to try, I know I don't want to go deep down that rabbit hole but just have to try a few. 1st the VK XLHP 22gr which I had great results in my Vet Long. 2nd some RMR Slappers and 3rd the new JSB 20.83 KO slugs. All around that 21-22gr weight range with large HPs and soft lead. We shall see how things turn out. I get the RMR and VK tomorrow. Weather has finally turned nice so potentially will be testing them tomorrow evening.

Your gun's groups, with the projectiles you are using, are very similar to how my Barra 250z is shooting them too. So much so, that I think when you find your solution, it just might be mine too. Keep at it. I will too. I can tell you right now that you really ought to try some AEA 21.9gr pellets.

Where did you find the JSB 20.83 KO slugs ? I was wanting to try some myself.

I have tried the AEA 21.9gr and are OK at best to me. The groups a few posts above on the paper are from my old Long in 2018. I posted the screen shot as it took me almost an hour to find and wanted it for info in a recent thread. My groups on card board with stickers are my current targets. I'm thinking maybe I didn't post the 21.9gr AEA targets. They didn't hold near as tight a group ad the 20.83gr Lights. But will be plugging away with it and slugs shortly. Definitely keep an eye out and hopefully it helps for your Barra also.
