Taipan Veteran 3D Printed Stock Project

I can’t stand 3D printed stuff but your stock is awesome. I only use my Taipan to hunt with and it’s not my idea of a bench gun. Your minimalist approach is perfect. If you or someone could perfect your design into a stout one piece unit, I can’t even fathom how many of them would sell. Nice
Appreciate the comments! Taipan's deserve to be used hard in the woods!!! I'm surprised nobody has chastised me for the scratches and damage all over her. . I wanted to attach all the parts to a chassis, but it adds a lot of weight. I am totally impressed with the stoutness in the shop, once the weather gets a bit nicer, I plan on bringing it out to the woods and put it through some paces.
Sacramento,
Vetmx convinced me to get the Taipan after I reported holding back for lack of a synthetic stock. Glad I listened, the .22 Standard has the sweetest trigger and best accuracy of any I own, so impressive, in fact, I bought a .25. Agree with Vetmx, anyone perfecting a stout one-piece design could expect high interest, especially, IMO, if reasonably priced. WM
I'm glad you listened too! I wonder if the newer VETERANS have the same size airtubes and hole/index patterns on them? Maybe someone who is comfortable removing their stock could post a picture and model description. I wasn't interested in a synthetic stock at all... but, thought the stock was taking away from a brilliant machine.
I had a guy on here that was going to make me a full Carbon Fiber stock for loaning him my wood stock off my B/P Cricket, The guy name was Zebra lived in N.Y and he kept my stock for about a year, ( I have some P.D contacts in N.Y) Sent my stock back to me .
No Carbon Fiber stock,,
The printed stock looks very good,, Not sure about the materials and the time , But you could make a little pocket change,
Mike
Bummer! I couldn't imagine designing a stock with out the gun... I found modeling the gun first is best for me. I don't know how much it costs to make one yet, some materials are a lot more expensive than others. Carbon Fiber blends are typically most expensive. I havn't made up my mind if they are most desirable, but, I like the texture and sheen of CF filled material.
My only gripe with Vets are the overall weight. I have the .25 compact and its a stout little fella. If I could shave off a pound it would be perfect! If you are entertaining selling these, let us know!
I didn't realize how much lighter it was until @JakeRico asked yesterday! I am hoping to get together with another Taipan owner nearby to get 'in hand' feedback and see if this fits other VETERAN or MUTANT configurations.
Very impressive. Hard to improve the Taipan, it is already perfect. However, you did it. Bravo!
This is the only pcp that I haven't felt any need to mod mechanically, I've never even touched the power adjuster or trigger. My overall favorite for sure

Well Done!

I'd say make the rail another 1" longer and somehow incorporate a mag holder into it. The mag holders I have that clip onto the barrel broke off while I've had my Mutant in the field.

Then make a bag rider/pic rail near the butt pad area ala PRS style for bench shooting?

The original grip is fine, but maybe a Magpul style AR grip would be way cool. I have a 3D version on my Edgun Leshiy when I bought it used, and I like it a lot.

If you started to sell these, you could probably recover the cost of your 3D gear? I'd take one in Flat Dark Earth. If you need measurements for the action, I'd be glad to help.

I don't know if it would fit on any other version. My gun is a first gen Veteran.
I have Mutant Standard 3gen word is that Vet Standard stocks fit Mutant Standard. so should work perfectly. I'd buy one for sure.

What scope do you have on your Taipan? For some reason airgunners seem to think they need a scope that can view distant galaxies. I switch to a compact Hawk 3-12 for hunting and I promise you, it’s a completely different gun.

Leupy Freedom 4-12, sub 20 ounces
My total weight on my set up is 8.45 lbs

Thanks for the input!

I would cry if my mag holder went missing, I will definitely keep that in mind when designing one...

Messed with an adjustable rear butt design I was playing with, has a pic already on the bottom of butt. Not familiar with how a bag would fit on the rail.

I bought a Buck Rail grip adapter for my Bandit, I really like being able to use the AR platform grip for it. Unfortunately, the attachment bolt to hold the stock on the Taipan makes that arrangement super tight because the AR grip bolt and the taipan mounting bolt would have to occupy the same space. Having to design the grip has been the most daunting part of the process. I still feel like I could improve it a bit, but really wish I could have found a way to incorporate off the shelf stuff.

Its been really fun sharing my project with you guys! All the interest surprises me a little. If I were to make one for anyone else, it would be after I was sure of durability. I haven't even had it out of the shop yet.

nice prints, what printer?

close up of the grip. I am using lower resolution print head to accommodate the carbon fiber filaments... they tend to clog high resolution print head... pretty happy with finish. I like the less 'plastic' look and feel of the carbon fiber and some other filaments.

On one hand, your stock is a little "blocky" and the front half is too much like the original design of the wood. Unless of course you like that design. The butt stock / rear half though, is a bit simple and reminds me of a kids lego block set.
Could / should be made with smoother, flowing lines. Think more free flowing water.

BUT...on the other hand. your basic construction, printer layout/ settings, the fact that it doesn't LOOK...like a normal, course surface, 3D printed part, is fantastic work.
Your finished surfaces look great.

Construction, machine setup wise A+ .

Hey Mike, Thanks for the feedback! Gives me some motivation. My goal is to make it feel like butter in me hands. So far it is lighter, and wields a little better for me without the brace from grip to butt. However, it still feels "blocky" in certain aspects. The flow is very import to me, I want to be able to walk for 5 or 6 miles and be very comfortable holding my airgun. My biggest hurdle is learning how to draw what I want to produce... This is far from what I would like to see. This is moslty a project about learning design, I hope to have something fun and useful to do when I retire. My business is to the point I can spend a little time on this kind of stuff. Most of the 'style ' aspects of the stock are there just because I learned something new on the drawing program. I started learning the free sketchup software in September, I took some autocad courses about 10 years ago and that knowledge has helped the learning curve. Once I am happy with the fit and mechanics and get a better command of the software, I'll rework the flow of a lot of the parts until I am satisfied. A lot of guys made cooments about a single piece design. I think that's a good idea too. Been working on attaching everything together from grip to butt and leaving the foregrip separate, for different attachments. simple grip, rail, whatever, etc. I haven't decided on the exact shape of the grip I want for hunting, but I know I will print it out of rubber so that it will be firm but cushy.
