Taipan veteran compact .22

Is there anything better than this gun at 23.6" long or shorter and around the $1600 range. I'm talking trigger, noise level, ease of use, and reliability out of the box? I sold my tiapan mutant .22 some years ago and have always regretted it. For the $1200 those cost it was a steal imo. I'm thinking about getting a new .22 compact veteran but figured I'd hear some opinions on the new stuff since I haven't followed along with all the new releases over the years. Thanks in advance for your responses!

You mention "ease of use." I'm sure you're aware of the position of the cocking lever on the Veteran. Their competitors have moved the lever forward. I certainly have no insider info, but I can't help but believe that they will move the lever on the Veteran in the near future--or take a significant hit in their market share. Hopefully they will improve the ergonomics of the stock at the same time. That said, most owners seem to love their Veterans.

The basic design of a violin dates back to 16th century Italy, and has remained essentially unchanged for centuries.

The Taipan Veteran doesn't need changing either.

It's perfect :)

I think I'll get another compact veteran. I have a veteran compact .25 and like it very much. I just figured I'd check if anything was a slam dunk choice over it or not from all the newer stuff. Does anyone know if there is a solution to the lelya 2.0 ping that I read about? Some people claim to have to wear an ear plug while shooting it. Guess it's time to sell the leshiy 2 and move back into another veteran .22. I might still get the lelya 2.0 also since it has the forward cooking to see if the ping is unbearable to me or not.

I have a .25 Wildcat MKIII compact and .22 Taipan Vet Standard. The Veteran in standard length, is better balanced when scoped and feels much more "solid". The wildcat is nose heavy when scoped. It is also one of the few guns I did not have to modify to shoot absolutely perfect. No barrel stiffeners, no aftermarket regulators, no dancing around the trigger to get the perfect "feel". The Taipan's only downside is the rear cocking lever (which operates like its on a bearing because...it actually is). The whole package is stout and without moderation, is pretty muted.

The Uragan is just...okay. I own the king and although accurate, doesnt feel as balanced and the damn trigger is plastic. The trigger isn't nearly as nice either...even when time is spent getting it as light and crisp as possible.

The Taipans trigger is just...amazing. You can really dial it in while maintaining safety. The Taipan is also SUPER accurate in part, due its rigidity and barrel (both LW and CZ are fabulous). The barrels are thick and the shrouds used also provide a tensioning effect (sandwiching the baffles while pulling the nose).

If a new Taipan could exist as an improved model, it would only need to introduce a forward cocking lever...leaving everything else alone.

This brings me to what's "Better".............The closest thing to a improved Taipan would be a Vulcan 2 (and the stbr Vulcan 3) BUT the compromise on all the AGT guns when compared to Taipan, is the trigger mechanics and material used on the shoe. They are all plastic and although adjustable, you cant really dial out the creep and adjust tension like you can on a Taipan...I'm probably not the only one who's tried and failed.

@anaranjo25 thanks for the thorough reply. It confirms my suspicions of the tiapan being the best for me. The trigger is gold and no additional moderator needed to be what I consider quiet. It's super accurate and with the exception of the rear cocking is just about perfect. Since I've been using the lelya 1st gen with the 1911 cooking I'd say it's faster and more convenient than the lelya but I don't mind the 1911 style. It only takes 1 shot if I do my part. Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply!

I have the Lelya 2.0 and as far as the ping sound during the shot requiring some type of ear protection, sorry I disagree with that unless you have some type of ultra sensitive hearing.
also if you ever consider selling your first generation Lelya keep me in mind.

Anti-double load is an important feature for me (pesting). I don't see any shift in POI after refilling, or after not using the gun for a while. The magazine is really easy to load even when holding the gun. The rear-cocking hasn't been a big deal for me but I did put a biathlon level on mine for improved ergonomics. An essential accessory for cold weather use is a non-metallic cheek rest. A magazine holder is really convenient. I got those accessories from Papy_Yosh. Not sure if these come standard now or if they are optional accessories from 3rd parties and Taipan. I also added the DonnyFL speed dialer and adapter to add a moderator to make my gun as quiet as possible (as a result I routinely get multiple shots off at pests in close proximity). I have had zero issues with mine in the 2.5 years that I have owned it. The length of pull is too short for me, so I wish Taipan would release the adjustable stock concept they were teasing for a bit.

@allan_wind

You are super correct about the magazines being easy to load and the anti double feed!

1. hold the mag in the palm of hand
2. scoop up a bunch of domed pellets with your other hand
3. drop the pellets onto the top of the mag in your palm
4. shake around and usually 70% will fall into their holes

Easy peazy.

Seriously take a look at the RT Prophet Performance Compact .22. AWESOME piece of equipment that sometimes rivals my Taipan. It's tough to decide which gun to pick up.

Above is in full nightime ratting atttire... ATN 4K pro, Predator Poly Mags.
I rarely use the bottom rail extender but wanted a pic of it.

With an EXTERNALLY adjustable regulator and hammer spring you can tweak the gun very quickly from shooting 16gr to shooting 25gr. I shoot the 16 or 18 gr at 120 bar (900fps) and get at least 6 mags per fill. That 72 PLUS shots.
