Taipan Taipan Veteran Long LW barrel testing (Original title - .22 CZ pellet barrel good with slugs?)

I currently have a .22 Taipan Veteran with a LW barrel. Most of the shootings I do are within 50 meters and I prefer to use pellets at those distances. However, I also occasionally want to target practice at longer distances, probably up to 100 meters and I want to use slugs or hybrids for those. I've read at least a few comments from people saying that their Veteran with LW barrels are also very accurate with slugs or hybrids.

With that said, I've also been curious about the CZ pellet barrels and I've been thinking of trying to find one for my Veteran long. However, the tight choke that makes the CZ barrels so accurate with pellets seem to work against them when it comes to slugs. I don't recall seeing anyone comment positively about the slug performance of the Veteran/Mutant with a CZ barrel. This is in regards to the .22 caliber. I'm aware that there is a CZ slug barrel for the Veteran but I do not want a dedicated slug barrel for the few occasions I plan to shoot slugs.

My question is, is it worth sacrificing slug accuracy to gain a slight improvement in pellet accuracy going from the LW to the CZ barrel? To be frank, I do not have any complaints with the pellet accuracy of the LW barrel that I have. I'm just curious to try with what people are saying about the CZ barrels.

Good question about the CZ barrel, I know from my own guns they are some super accurate barrel, But I would like to broaden your question has any one ever ruined a barrel shooting slugs, You know went from pellets to slugs then back to pellets and it screwed every thing up???

I will say I am pretty skittish about putting a slug down any of my barrels, I might try with my Mutant 22 its got a Listone barrel that shoots any pellet super good, But its only shooting 16 gr low 800 , High 700 FPS so no real need for a slug....

That's a good question as well. So far from searching, I've seen at least 2 people with LW Veterans say their guns shoot NSA 17.5gr .2165 slugs. On the otherhand, I've read a number of people saying that even .216 on their CZ barrels are VERY tight when pushing the projectile into the barrel. I read 1 person say that their CZ barrel Taipan shoots slugs better than their other gun with a LW barrel, but for the most part, people with CZ barrels who comments about slugs mostly say that they have issues getting good groups. These are all anecdotal evidence from people's comments on the internet that I have read. Please correct me if there are misinformation on my part.

I used to have a taipan veteran long .22 it shoot slugs great if they were below 22g why barrel is tight lo anything longer than that it shoot horrible...that was until I decided to try boat tail slugs I tested some 28g and it shoot awesome but it was lacking of the power to push them at the ideal speed at that time they were no plenums available yet..boat tails are heavy but that design have less drag in the barrel...now I have a old standard .22 cricket it shoot great the 17.5 -- n 20g slugs..but since the knock outs are soft lead or at least softer than the NSA ..it shoot those great to..

The speed is 800 NOT 900 fps

CZ barrel, Taipan Mutant 5.5, the good old one OEM use the same from CZ 200

Good post. I have been looking into a slug shooter. I really dont want to buy any slugs only to find that I waisted money on them because my air guns wont shoot them well. I do have a .25 vulcan that I might pick some up for. I am really considering getting the EVOL .22 HPS. Hell I probably would of bought/ordered one last week. AoA is just down the road from me. Honestly Im downright terrified with all the political crap going on right now. Ill most likely wait and see if all hell breaks out in the next few weeks. Sorry for bring up the s@&t.

Just to update this thread, I've finally got the chance last night to start testing slugs in my LW barreled Taipan Veteran Long. I've been curious about slugs for a few years now but never really got around to testing them because I really have no practical use for them for a backyard varmint rifle. I bought my NSA sample packs 3 years ago. I tried both the NSA .216 and .2165 at 24 meters. The .216 is unacceptable but the .2165 seems stellar. My gun is tuned for the Hades 15.89 at 945 FPS and with that tune, the NSA slugs were shooting at 888 FPS. I only briefly tested it because the sun was coming up and my gun was almost at regulator pressure, but I will test again tonight. I try to do my outside gun tests during the night to avoid exposing myself to the neighbors. I do it from well inside a window so no one outside hears the muzzle report. Tonight, I will put the chronograph down range to get a more accurate BC for the slugs. I will also zero the rifle. The slugs were shooting about 1.2 mils down and 0.6 mils to the right compared to the Hades 15.89gr at the same distance.

I had the chance to buy a 550mm CZ barrel for my gun a few months ago but I passed on the opportunity. It's just too big of a risk with how mixed the reviews are of the CZ pellet barrels with slugs. I want my gun to be a pellet rifle first and foremost, but of course, I still want slugs to shoot well out of it for the few times I want to shoot at longer distances.

I started this thread because I was curious about the CZ barrels as it seems to always get very high praises from everyone in regards to its performance with pellets, but truth be told, I have no complaints with the LW barrel's accuracy with pellets, and now, it seems like it's good with NSA slugs as well.

I went out tonight and zeroed the scope for the NSA 17.5gr .2165 caliber. This is with the Taipan Veteran Long with LW barrel. Distance is at 27 meters. The smaller targets are sighters. The big target on the top left is a 5 shot group measuring 0.265" center-to-center. The big target on the lower right is 2 shots 0.1 mil up from the other target. As you can see, my scope is in between clicks.

This session is 12 shots (FPS= 906, 899, 899, 900, 900, 900, 898, 902, 900, 901, 903, 900).

This was done outside, at night so there was no wind.

I must say that I'm quite happy with the performance of this slug. I only have a sampler of 40 slugs, so time to buy some more! This is definitely hunting accurate for my purposes.

I've been doing some more testing on the 3 NSA slugs that I currently have. I did ordered more of the 0.2165 17.5gr since it seems to shoot the best in my gun. I decided to do more testing just to make sure that I'm not wasting my money.

Tonight, I tried out the 0.216 17.5gr (as can be seen in lower right target). The first shot was right on the red because I was practically shooting where I zeroed the 0.2165s at. The more shots I did though, the more the slugs started to scatter. 0.42" center-to-center.

The next group on the lower left target is the 0.2155 17.5gr. The shots were about 10 FPS lower than the 0.216 which I thought at first I was off regulator. I checked it and reg was good so I chocked it up to the smaller diameter not having a complete seal on the barrel. (I did shot two of the 0.2165 after this group just to make sure that it is indeed what I think it is, and the 0.2165 shot at my expected velocity of around 900 FPS.) This is a 5 shot group. Three went into the lower hole. This would have been very good if it weren't for the top two holes. 0.38" center-to-center.

Overall, the 0.2165 is still the most accurate of the three I've tried. The 0.2155 is 13 FPS slower than the 0.216 on average, which is another 4 FPS slower than the 0.2165. These were shot at 32 meters. One thing I noticed is that the 0.2155 was about half a click higher than the other two even though it is the slowest of the three.

The top left target is the one I shot a few nights ago with the 0.2165s at 28 meters (I said in the above post that it's 27 meters but it was actually 28 meters. I measured from the windowsill then and didn't take into account that I am inside the window). I was in between clicks on my scope for the 28 meter zero, so I re-zeroed at 31 meters to get it spot on.
