Tuning Taipan Veteran long slug tune

Hello all,

Took the Vet out for it's initial run and experienced TERRIBLE grouping; like 1.5 - 2.5" @ 25yds. NO consistency. I only fed 2 types or rounds through it for now, NSA .216" 23gr and H&N 21gr.

My Vet does have a Huma regulator, CZ 700mm barrel, power plenum, DFL adjuster, and power spring.

I will confirm regulator pressure later today (I think it's at 120bar). I was averaging 980 - 1016fps but like others have experienced, when I adjust the HS in, it won't cock. Actually, from where the HS just just allows the gun to cock to no tension on spring is almost nothing. So basically I can not adjust the power. I replaced the original spring with both DFL and original HS cap and no change. HS tension was same with both.

I assuming that the .216" is designed better to fit a choke and the CZ barrel doesn't have a choke? I have ordered NSA samples @ .218".

With the reputation of this rifle, I know I have something grossly out of sync. Any recommendations?

I just started doing the same thing with my Veteran Long with PP and Huma regulator and the 550mm barrel, and regulator set at 140 bar. . So far NSA 17.5's only work decent with the .216 size. Nothing in .217 worked such as NSA 17.5 in ..217, Daystate Howlers in 217, JSB Knockout's in .216. H&N .217 in 21 and 23 grain didn't work..

I just ordered H&N .217 in 25grain and NSA .216 in 20.3 grain. I haven't thought of the .218's yet, so looking forward to seeing what you get.

That being said this rifle with JSB 25.39's is as good as any gun out there, which is what I bought it for in the first place. I have listened to a few people on here concerning their accuracy with slugs, but apparently their definition and my definition of accuracy is way different.

980 – 1016fps

If the HS is maxed maybe back it off and down towards 900ish fps ad see.

Have you shot the JSB / FX domed pellets?

Lots of variables!

When I try to back it off, it's basically disengaging and not doing anything. I haven't shot any pellets through it, just slugs for now. I can try pellets but I assume I would need to slow the pellet down since the slug barrle has a faster twist rate? But since I cannot slow the speed, its not possible in its current state.

Adjusting regulator pressure doesn't add or subtract HS tension, does it?

This sounds really wrong. Go back to a more factory / stock config and try with (typically) known pellets.

I am selling my slug barrel since I have THOUSANDS of .216" slugs designed for regular choked barrel. Buying larger diameter slugs for slug barrel right now isn't practical given the demand.

Wish now I had a 2nd Veteran in .22.

The only 700mm CZ barrel I know about for the Taipan is from Talon Tunes. Is that un-choked? He doesn't say that online.

Whether cars, firearms, air rifles, or anything else, almost every time I have engaged in modifications, there has been a learning curve, and often frustration. But generally, things have worked out approximately as planned. Good luck in getting your Veteran running as you want. As an owner of a Veteran Standard in .22, I will say, as delivered, it is one of the best out there, and maybe the best value in the market. The factory Taipan regulator is absolutely superb, and the LW barrel in mine is as good as any barrel I've ever owned. Worst case, put it back stock and you have a great air rifle.

I wonder if he has the stock barrel?

Mine was awesome out of the box but shooting a little hot, I changed that.

Same here, just made a small HST adjustment. I probably need to drop the reg set point a bit, but it shoots so good, I'm hesitant to mess with it .

I have the Taipan reg set just right for .25 cal , 25.4 jsb / fx and Hades. Gonna install the new Huma that Talon Tunes would not allow me to return (new unused and asked to cancel the order) and set it to 150+ bar and mess with the 34grain JSb / FX.

I still have the factory barrel and regulator. The factory barrel is back on but I'm not getting the groups I desire. At 25yds I am a getting .75 - 1" groups anywhere from 740 to 1026 fps. I'm sure it would shoot JSB 18gr great but I want to accomplish 2 things:

1. Shoot a heavier load. 25gr+. I cannot get any slugs to shoot consistent from either barrel. Will try .217" and up slugs when they arrive.

2. Find s round that everyone isn't using. As ever can attest to, if you were using JSB 18gr, you are out of luck as the shortage will put a end to shooting until, well, whenever for the foreseeable future.

I wish there was more information on the CZ 700mm barrel. I did get it from Talon Tunes. I can not confirm it's choke or twist.
