Taipan Veteran Range time

It showed up today . It's shooting 18g at 927 fps with good consistency. Thanks for the encouragement I'm really glad I pull the trigger on this one . I did some shooting and checked it on a chronograph to see what a shot string looked like. It just oozes with quality smooth cocking, great metal trigger and safety. I only used the single shot tray , and it's so easy to get pellets into and locks into place . Probably around 150 shots so far. 14.4 g pellets are doing about 1005 fps. So much more testing to do. Thanks again.

Shout out to Utah Airguns . They checked it over , shot it over a chronograph and shot a couple targets and super fast shipping.

Is it true that that the Taipan Veteran is an airgun that anyone into hunting pcps should try or own ? Most owners seem to really like them and some wish they never sold theirs. The prices on new first gen models are good right now. Is it really that good without mods . ? In .22 and .177 ? Thanks
Yes, they are THAT good. I’ve had a few and still own 2. My shorty is one of my favorite rifles. They hold air forever, accurate as any rifle at any price point, they are built to last and they have a trigger that is among the best you will ever squeeze.

I was a bit worried that mine would only come with 1 magazine because of the under $1200 price. Glad to say it came with 2 mags , one single shot tray , and what looks like a full oring kit and a few extra that seal the pellet probe. I should have ordered a probe adapter with the purchase, but ended up making work with parts on hand. I did some 50 yard groups with Airboss pellets, but I don't think the Taipan likes them much. I did receive 1000 rounds of .22 Hades , FX branded atomics and im hoping it likes them . Didn't get to try them yet. After spending the day with it I think it was a fantastic value. And next to the 600mm Maverick it looks like a compact.

Something I like more on the original vs the new version is the rear cocking . So why would I want it over a side cock version ? After owning the Maverick its clear that the linkage is more complex and has more possible failure points.

The barrel isn't free floated on the original. So why would I want that ? I'm not a fan of long barrels only supported by breech block, that's a lot of leverage if you hit your barrel on something. Having it supported by the beefy frame , is to me , a good solid setup.

Anti double loading. I have read that the new side lever does not have it.

The first version has proven itself. That and a 2 year warranty gives me piece of mind.

A couple of 50y groups.

I went out in some light rain to test 16g FX Atomics . 22 , aka Hades, . I was hoping they would be accurate at speed so I wouldn't have to tune it just for Hades. It's looking good so far , and I hope it stays accurate out to 50 . This might help Vet standard owners using a factory tune.

The group on the left is from leaving the scope set for 18g pellets at 50. Then I randomly turned some knobs and shot the 5 shot group on the right. At 25 yards.

I’d think that’s pretty hot for Hades but you can’t argue with that target result.

Well it did open up at 50 . By the time I got back out the wind gusting from the left and behind me. But I don't think it's all wind I wanted to try some 18g to see if they grouped better in the same wind but it started raining harder. I do want to slow it down for Hades.. I'll try again tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

I found out my Veteran doesn't like H&N pellets much. The FX Hybreds fit too tight so I stopped at 3. It seems to have a tighter chamber than my other. 22 airguns . It shoots really good with JSBs except the 13.4s the single shot tray didn't work well , it's a short pellet. The 18g jsb at 927 fps are real accurate and look forward to a calm day. The 16g Hades don't look to bad for the conditions but seem wind sensitive at 960 fps

Nothing great on the targets way to much coffee and some wind w gusts that didn't help. If I do my part it's one accurate shooter.

The SD is looking good.

Slow them down to 910 or under. They will tighten up.

I decided to tune it for 16g Hades for now. It was too close to the Mavericks power. Now its shooting around 915 just under 30 fpe and accuracy seems pretty good. Only 5/8 of a turn to get there.

This was the end of the string . The shot count is excellent for a small airgun, 50 shots and could have gotten 15-20 more .

Have you ran a shot string or have an idea at shot count with the lower reg pressure? I would be happy if it slings 18g lead at 960 fps or even if it's 880 plus. I want this one to be set it and forget it. I do have calipers. Are you adjusting the HS also? Thanks.
So I did some basement range testing and shooting 16s at 890 fps I get 80 shots from 200 bar down to 80 bar which is where the reg is set at. I hand pump so no need to pump all the way up to 250 bar. With this setting, it throws the 18s around 830 fps.

I had a chance to try out some 17.5 NSA slugs .216 diameter. It didn't do to bad but I'm thinking it fouled the barrel faster. Sticking with pellets for now and I didn't make any adjustments from shooting Atomics at 900 fps. The slugs were probably around 850 fps..
I was getting strange patterns from the wind. Not great but most did stay under an inch at 50 yards.

Is it true that that the Taipan Veteran is an airgun that anyone into hunting pcps should try or own?…
The answers to this question don’t seem to quite satisfy the question, at least not the way I read it. Shooting seated or with bags isn’t how I hunt. I don’t know if many guys that go out pesting shoot that way, but it doesn’t reflect a small-game hunting scenario (think squirrel, rabbit, raccoon at the largest). I don’t think that airgun hunters are shooting groups into animals too often. I have done that 2-3 times and that was because I was unsure of the first shot or I was trying to put an animal down fast. Other than to verify the capabilities of the gun’s precision (repeatable accuracy) with a particular projectile and tune, I don’t think that groups are that important in regards to hunting.

I’m also wondering about the practicality in using a Taipan Veteran for hunting small game. I carry my guns afield and shoot standing, kneeling, sitting on the ground (and sometimes a bucket), laying on my back, and offhand. I prefer to have a single point sling for compact air-rifles. For a rest I’ll typically use a tree, my knee, or Trigger Stick bipod. Sometimes I’ll use a tripod where I can mount the gun to the tripod. For those with experience, is the Taipan Veteran suited for these styles of hunting?
