I gave in a tried the Taipans last year...decent guns but the rear cocking was definitely a drawback. There are a lot of Taipans fans for sure and most seem to tolerate the rear cocking lever because of the Taipan's other good qualities. You don't see many people who love it or have that as their preferred cocking position if they could design the rifle from scratch. Don't tell me that you wouldn't move the lever forward on your Veteran if you could.
Count me as another who would NOT change the cocking lever position. It is much more convenient while shooting from a bench where it is at. Since most of us shoot our guns with the gun in a rested position (on a bipod, tripod, bags, etc.), ease of shooting in this position should probably be the priority. During the few times I'm shooting it standing offhand, it's current position doesn't bother me at all.
