Airforce talon SS tuning issues...

hello everyone, early this year I purchased a talon SS from PA and for the most part its been a really nice gun for what I use it for. when I first got it I tuned it for about 815 fps and the ES was very manageable and I didn't see any POI shift even at 50 yards. well, I couldn't leave good enough alone, and started messing with it and now I can't get back to where I was. it seems no matter how I tune it, no matter what top hat im using, o-ring or no o-ring, the tunes are just terrible. here's what's going on. on high power (about 45 FPE) I can get about 30 shots from 2800 psi down to 2000 psi with an ES of 44 FPS. on low power...I get about 10 shots from 2800 psi to about 2400 psi, then the velocity climbs over 100 FPS about where I started. I know this is typical of non regulated guns, and sure I could just fill to 2400 psi and try that, but odds are id get about 30 shots at most, so if im going to do that I may as well go for a high power tune. ive considered getting a heavy hammer for it to see if that helps anything, but im honestly at the point of selling it because its getting way too frustrating for me. anyone have any ideas? I would and have considered getting a reg for it, but I don't know if I wanna spend that kind of money on the gun at this time.

Well, what is the problem, what frustrates you, the power curve on low? What happens below 2400 psi? I suggest to not guess, but to test it! For my AF guns (3 of them now) the power band is in the 2400 to 1800 psi range, regardless of orifice or barrel or power level. I know the manual says 3000 psi or whatever, but it is what it is once we find out what it is.

I don't know anything about the talon, actually have been looking at a Condor 22 caliber.. not sure what difference is between them although the Condor seems more powerful, and I was looking at shooting jsb beasts.. most guns the magazine is too small for them..
anyway I have a question about what you said.. your new gun worked perfectly and then you did some adjustments..
isn't there any where in the manual or something that says a starting point? so like if you get it out of adjustment, can't you set it to whatever number and orface and basically start at factory settings..
I'd like to hear more, especially if I decide to get a Condor 22 and not regret doing it..
I'd actually like a Texan in 22 caliber so I could have a 36" barrel instead of the 24" Condor..
mostly looking for extreme long distances..
I've got a couple others that I am considering so I'm trying to get some research done before I spend money

From the factory they use the standard .232 orface and I think they just put the power wheel somewhere in the middle, my issue is I set it up differently as soon as I got the gun, before I even shot it for the first time. but yes the condor is basically the same, just a longer barrel and more powerful

okay, so, ive done some testing...and yeah it looks like you're 100% correct. im chalking up my early results as a "break in period" or something because it used to shoot very consistently from 2800psi down to ~2000psi (weather could have also been a factor considering it was at the end of winter when I got this gun)...but here are the current results

this is the shot string from 2400psi down to 1900psi.

and this is 2400 down to 1800

so its looking like im going to be filling to 2400psi for now on, hopefully the barrel likes this speed

Great, glad yours is now working satisfactorily! I think you're right, it was just breaking in. I found on mine after a hundred or so shots I had to re-adjust the distance from the breech to top hat because the valve had fully seated into the tank.

It is pretty easy to get 1200 FPS with 45 to 48 grain slug in a condor with 27.5 inch barrel..Special valve and 115 gram hammer heavy spring.. I have 12 twist and its not enough.. I think a 7-9 twist would be ideal.

Hope this helps some. I have not worked on a tune yet on my Condor .22 because I want to try some slugs first but this is at 1.5 out of 12 on the power wheel 3000psi original top hat using JSB Beast and Hades Monster pellets at just 30 yards. As I said, I'm not working on a tune just yet but the groups got better going from 1 to 1.5 on the wheel. I want to try 34-40 grain slugs first before I decide what I want to tune it for.

As for the TalonSS I would try giving the barrel a good cleaning first. I have seen airforce make a remark that when a gun gets sent back to them for accuracy problems, they will clean the barrel with some JB Bore Bright and it normally takes care of the problem. AOA also has a cleaner degreaser that some people think is okey. Just something to consider. I used both JB polishing products on a TalonP and I felt like it did a good job and the groups were better. Pasadena Mike seems to like the results it was his TalonP. Good luck.
