Target practicing in woods; in Trouble NEED HELP!

I was out with a friend target practicing in wooded area last Friday & got surrounded by 4 police officers! I had over 3000$ worth of equipment confiscated. 2 air rifles that had expensive optics as well as 2 expensive bags, a 400$ 90ci air bottle tools etc.. there were 3 town cops & one state police officer. The state police officer after being on the phone with one of his superiors for over 10 minutes, came to the decision to confiscate ALL of my gear! I repeatedly asked why he was taking everything from me and was told smiling while he said: "it's for my investigation", & that all of my stuff will be destroyed!" We than got escorted out of the woods, @ was told that we'll be receiving a summons in the mail. He also said that reason being was that I was within 100ft of a dwelling which was untrue for we were in the woods... I do have a lawyer, but he's never experienced anything like this before, & from what I gathered neither did the State Trooper... I live in Massachusetts, & had no idea that what I was doing was wrong, for I had my targets low in the ground & a big boulder behind it.. I have a fishing & hunting license, & 20 years+ over 18 (yet was not hunting).. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, Ty -SF.

I have all of my receipts of pretty much of everything that was taken, & really don't know what my rights are in this matter for I've been to this place dozens of times without issues... Also My rifles were set to lowest power settings to conserve air.

Were you tresspassing? Just because it is wooded, doesn't mean it doesn't belong to someone.

Was just typing the same thing.
The next question is do you have a record? Surely they ran your name and social. Even if you weren't breaking any laws, having a record will make them want to look closer. Especially if you have a felony and can't possess "firearms." I'm well aware that airguns aren't firearms, but they may not be.

Sounds like your equipment was stolen....never heard of them having to destroy evidence.....I wouldn't think you will be receiving a summons with no apparent evidence.....just my 2 cents and I am very sorry for the trauma!
Thanks, I started recording & have it all on video as he had a camera on him. The guy was completely oblivious to everything at one point he had his hand near the trigger of the one of the rifles and the barrel right @ his head! I took the picture from the video... I couldn't believe it till I saw it! Would post it but didn't want to get in any trouble on the forum.

No, I'm actually a Marine combat veteran. I also have an FID card as well but don't use PB's anymore due to an injury sustained @ work. I'm a Union Labour Forman. Also a single father with full custody of child. That's why I already have a lawyer. He does my probate matters for me. But he also does criminal matters for other people.

My friend and I were shooting mistletoe out of his oak trees with our PCP's on his property and some passersby called the police on us, an officer rolled up and saw/knew we were shooting airguns and called that in saying everything was fine and wanted to see our high end PCP's (M3 and RAW) and thought they were incredible and his back up showed up from a nearby city and asked if we would come shoot ground squirrels in his city for him! Very different than your encounter....

I did go to the state police barracks to inquire about my gear the next day. I was told by the front desk that my stuff was locked up in evidence... I told them that the officer took many pictures of everything then asked why they wouldn't give me my tools bags & other stuff back. Was told I needed to go to court first. ...I can see them holding on to the rifles, but not all of my other equipment and tools.

Hopefully all those factors will aide in getting your property back.

Jesus I wish that was the case with me! The other officers there the Town Police that is said that they would have handled it differently (basically just asking us to leave and escorting us out) but it was out of their hands due to the state police officer being there. SMH IDK even if/when I go to court I know I'm not guaranteed to get all my stuff back! I feel like I've been raped! A lot of time, $, & tuning went into the FX they took.. just had tuned it perfect finally...

What a horrible experience. I’m curious who complained.
I also live in MA. No shooting on state land or public roadways. Private property with permission or a range. There’s nothing stating distance from private property so long as they don’t inherit your projectiles.
You may get a small fine in the end. No crime here. Still sucks.
Thank you for your service.
