Target shooting...I can't be the only one

I mostly shoot at steel targets in my backyard...and yes, occasionally, tree rats do find themselves in the wrong backyard. However, I find target shooting (paper) a lot less fun. This is not because I think target shooting in and of itself is not fun. It's just my brain finds itself on overdrive trying to get the perfect group and I forget to have fun.

There's something so simplistically pleasing about ringing steel or sniping dragonflies that land down range.

I can't be the only one to feel this way.

Same here. I can get about 50yds in my backyard range and it's full of steel. Most of it from Shootingtargets7. I have mostly 1" gongs, several 1/4" KYL paddles and a few larger plates for some quick site-ins if things get weird haha. I shoot mainly spinners with my 177's cuz, well, they just don't do much against steel. 22's and 25's have a very satisfying WHACK!!

You are not alone. From deck, spinners/steel @ 35, 45, 70, 85 and 100 yds i like sound and movement when i shoot.

I tend to enjoy target shooting. Maybe a paper target, split a card, blow up a cola or hit a spinner. I’m not interested in hunting and don’t have much in the way of pests so I practice at different distances and shooting positions so if there’s something that needs shooting it isn’t a problem. I shoot because I enjoy shooting.

Well I like shooting paper,I strive to make 5 pellets go thru the same hole at 100 yards over and over again. I can pellets and my tune for each. On good days I have several groups like this. On rare days I have single hole groups. Here's some I shot today. First group was a 23 round mag. I wanted to know how the wind affects these pellets. See,the ones outside the group are not far away. This pellets and tune will shoot you an high score. Second group is five shots, only one miss and it was small.Thrid group was in same conditions I shot the first picture. While there's no wind, this tune and pellet will shoot really well, but in winds it's very inconsistent. Not what I'd want to use on match day. It's aea 50 grain at 930fps. No wind they're great,in wind you have to be a wind reader to hit what your shooting at. Can't figure this out shooting steel. Don't you want to be able to hit the steel way far out? If you shoot paper first, you'll know.

Shooting steel is instant feedback and gratifying. When I was having problems with my archery, I would blow balloons up to about 2” size and shoot them at 40 & 50 yards. Self rewarding exercise. Make the shot and the ballon pops. Way more satisfying than having to walk to the target and see where you are hitting.
I do like shooting paper once in a while. It forces discipline of the shot process.

I usually shoot steel in the backyard. My shooting companion is my nine year old. If we were shooting paper, it would quickly become a competition and I think that would discourage him. My brother doesn't have any neighbors so when we go to his place, we just find targets of opportunity. Last time, we were shooting apples out of one of his trees. Another time we shot walnuts that had fallen on the ground.

Yeah, Reactive targets are fun, I like others have said just enjoy shooting, Paper, Steel, Spinners, Splatter burst, Cans, things that go BOOM!, critters, Pests...
I have a steel box trap I shoot paper attached to, it's a noisy bugger, I sometimes see the neighbors looking over the fence, but they are cool with it just curious, I'm sure. I'm always safe and don't shoot everything that crosses my air space.

Paper, steel, critters, cans, cookies, critters...
A smorgasbord of target opportunity.

I now shoot in traps due to the amount of lead I was cleaning up ..

You can hang steel / spinners in a trap as well .

I also like my steel to have a ring to them like a nice arcade "!DING!" My pot and frygongs give a nice " CLUNK" ..lol

I shoot steel 90% not a paper puncher to boring. I do shoot a weekly paper match that is field target style with a group of guys(backyard group ) but it's from FT positional shooting. I just can't do bench shooting. I am a hunter and practice how I hunt with sticks and a seat. I can shoot out to well no limit I guess at my house. I have spinners from 20 to 100 yds mostly. After that I have a bunch of ar500 targets hanging out to 800yds for the PBs
