1. the gun is a BSA R10 .177 shooting around 18.5 FPE for FT.
2. unless you have this gun, your experience will probably be totally different. Please try these pellets too.
3. I’ve think I’ve tried virtually every pellet and head size out there. If you’ve got some that I may have overlooked you would like to see me test, please feel free to send me a small sample of 10 or so and I’ll be sure to post the results and give you credit for sending them.
This is pretty straight forward. During the early stages of pellet testing last year, I discovered the gun much preferred a 4.50mm head compared to the same pellet in a 4.52mm head. Particularly the H&N Baracuda Match 10.65.
About a week ago I noticed H&N had a pellet I’ve not tried or at least had a test target with the results. They are the Baracuda FT “hand sorted quality”. While looking through my test target results I also couldn’t find one for the FTT 8.64 4.50mm head and I could have sworn I had tested them.
Anyway, I ordered a tin of each to shoot them against the laser-beam pellets my gun loves.
Here are the results
Target distance is 30 yards - zenith zero for my gun. Orange target dots are 1 1/2”.
shot from a bag front and rear
weather conditions were 85 degrees and dead calm
10 shots each
Baracuda Match 10.65 4.50mm head. (Currently using)
I wanted set a baseline to compare what I’m currently shooting. Quite honestly, after shooting this “test” group I almost didn’t bother to test the others.
But I had ‘em so I used ‘em.
So for the next group I thought I’d try the pellets with the name, Field Target Trophy in it. That’s what we all aspire to win, right? the Trophy! Well, not today with these pellets. Now again, let me say, your gun may shoot these babies lights out.
And finally the new pellets. Another pellet with “FT” in its name. H&N really focuses on FT as they offer several models with that destination in the name. So you gotta try them if you shoot FT, right? These even claim “hand sorted quality” who doesn’t want somebody else to do the dirty work? Count me in!
I’m impressed with these pellets. The group was slightly larger and had the one zinger at 2 o’clock but are the closest group to the Baracuda’s I’ve shot so far. My shootin buddy and I are going to do more testing tomorrow with his gun and I may take mine along and shoot a few more of these and just see.
I would encourage anyone shooting FT (or just for fun for that matter) who’s groups just aren’t where they want them, to try some of the other head sizes out there. IMO, the fact the barrel in my gun is hammer forged and may have a tighter choke lends itself to preferring a slightly smaller head size.
Good luck in your shooting and give some of these a try.
