Airforce Texan Full size vs carbine .457

wow, I answered too fast, I missed the same speed part, not enough coffee.
Deleting my long answer, basically it's a crap shoot, harmonics will be different on two barrels of different lengthes, whether they align or not will mostly decide, but then again two barrels of same length can have vastly different preferences. Simply a matter of trying.

I ordered the african air ordnance upgrade kit for the texan in 457/510. I have a long texan 457 currently but don't want to modify it. I am going to do another build this time since my other 457 already has doug noble bits and I like the way it shoots.

If I built a carbine 457 with the aao upgrade kit, I would be able to shoot the 301 grain slugs as fast or faster than my current long setup.

My 1st gen edgun lelya is a tack driver and has a short barrel so it had me thinking if the power was there to push the slugs, is the extra barrel length necessary for the same accuracy.

Also I'm only looking to shoot this accurately to 200 yards (paper/coyote) and out to 60 yards (deer) if possible.

I appreciate the reply. I found 1 other thread from this year, but it didn't have a cut and dry answer. If the search function gurus have additional threads you want to post here please feel free. Just looking for info and wasn't finding what I needed.

Usually accuracy better with shorter barrels..stiffer ,less harmonic s....The 34 inch barrel will shoot heavy slugs probably as fast as short 24inch barrels with light slugs. My2cents. Are you using a booster pump for your 4500 psi fills? How has the AAO valves held up.for you? I've wanted one for three years for my .510 texan!!!! I have a Scott 5.5 tank 5500 psi and aqua environmental 6000 psi regulator..I really want to sling some .510 650 grain spire points boat tails at 1000 fps😀. I'm really starting to hate my 800 fps trajectory🙄

I'm awaiting delivery of the aao kit. I was looking to save some length but not sacrifice accuracy.

I could always build a 308 or a 510. I got the pieces i needed to swap the system to the 257/308 valve as well.

I will keep you updated on the durability. It will likely be a month or 2 before everything is complete. I'm just gathering information and making a few decisions before I send it off to have everything set up.

I appreciate the info.

If both were shooting the same slug at the same speed would the accuracy be the same?
At the same medium/short distance with light slugs, the short barrel more likely to have an accuracy edge.

For long distance, with heavy slugs at high velocity, the short barrel will have a more violent shot cycle, which can affect your accuracy. The longer barrel can do the same velocity with lower pressure and a lighter hammer strike.
