Texas just made airgun hunting legal. But what about Caddo LBJ?

Hey everyone... After Texas made airgun hunting legal I decided to hop on in to the hobby. I dont know anyone with land so public hunting grounds are my only option. I am close to the LBJ lands NW of Dallas fort worth.

I cant seem to find the legality of airgun hunting on those lands. On the website they specify only Shotguns, Black powder and archery. That rule is in place to make it a safer area for the hikers and horseback riders, so logically it seems airgun rifles should be OK, but rules is rules.

I plan to call once the holidays and the govt shutdown are past, but I am really curious and was wondering if anyone has any insight.

I'm guessing you're talking about the public lands near Decatur I used to shoot on in the 1970s, that we called The National Grasslands. It was so overused back then that there wasn't much to hunt; but I did make a superhuman shot on a running squirrel with a .45 auto Colt Gold Cup.

Logic would suggest that airguns would be allowed in Texas anywhere that shotguns, black powder, and archery is legal. Unfortunately logic doesn't always prevail when bureaucracies are involved. Some cage-rattling might help make it happen; then again, rattling the wrong bureaucrat's cage could also be counter-productive. I'd think a polite call wouldn't hurt.

thanks everyone.

I will make a polite call and try to get something in writing before i would be willing to go out and hunt on those lands.

I am really excited about going squirrel hunting again. I had a lot of fun doing it with .22's when I was a kid. Did it a few times with shotguns and it just wasn't the same.

I will update this thread when i find out.

Willy,

That is very kind of you... Do you hunt hogs with air rifles? I dont think my .25 marauder would quite be up to that task!
