The Barra 1866 Cowboy and my Grandson

Recently purchased this Barra 1866 Cowboy pneumatic lever airgun for myself and the youth model for my 7 year old grandson. He’s coming to visit grandpa in a few weeks along with dad, mom and sister. He and grandpa both have February birthdays to celebrate. Him, my son and myself are also planning a Wild West trip trip this summer to Yellowstone and the works. My grandson always wants to wait to celebrate his birthday with his grandpa. All this of course does nothing for me. So anyway, these cowboy rifles for us both to unwrap. Grandma sent this picture of grandpa and the rifle to mom which got to grandson. Now my son is telling me that my grandson is driving him crazy for cowboy boots and a jean jacket. Short drive. Just can’t wait.

Information on the Barra 1866 Cowboy:

Purchased this adult size model from Walmart’s website for $69. The youth model from Amazon $46. The adult model weighs just under 5 lbs so it’s substantial. The stock and gold receiver are plastic and pretty much the rest is metal. It pumps up to 10 times. Shoots pellets or bb’s at around 650 fps. Maybe 700. Haven’t ran it through the Chrony yet. It has a rifled steel barrel and is incredibly accurate. Use only pellets. It is a trick to load the pellets. Takes time to figure out the system that works for you. Bb’s load in a door and self load each time the bolt is cocked. The pump handle is the lever and is steel on the adult model but plastic on the youth. The youth model is a 3 pump that shoots around 350 fps. It weighs about half the adult model. Sights are fully adjustable for both windage and elevation. I really like it. It’s a hoot to shoot. Cocks very easy and the first pump is the same hardness as the 10th. Would think there would be a market for a pneumatic like this of a higher quality. But they put out a lot of fun here for not much money.

These kind of rifles are a must have in my book, that is the powder burning ones, if i was able to own such things for sure i would have one in my collection, actually there is a very high chance that one of those will be the first rifle i got.

I once ( some time in the late 80ties ) held one of the gold plated and engraved Winchester commemorative rifles in my hand,,,,, and my brain instantly kicked out " this is the way" as it also played the theme from Bonanza.

My neighbor left one of those here for me to shoot and I had a hell of a time trying to load pellets in it. I just sat it in the corner and it’s still sets there. They definitely could’ve Designed that thing to be able to load pellets easier. And I don’t shoot BBs in any of my own guns that are dual ammo because BBs shoot horrible in them because of the rifling.I guess you will get the hang of it before too long. Good luck

got mine yesterday and was able to put fifty rds crossman 7.9 hp through it today i hope you and your grandson have as much fun with it as i did this afternoon in backyard what a fun gun to shoot its pretty accurate out to 30 yds far as i can see with open sites anyways 10 pumps chrony at 670 fps just load pellets with curved needle nose or tweezers like a lot of these types of guns i brought it inside and took the slippery gold butt plate off and painted it with black truck bed liner so i think its a really neat gun have fun makes me wish my kids were little again. oh and by the way no soup cans escaped.
