The Most Off-Putting Ad in the Classifieds?

I can understand that if you are running a business. He’s trying to sell a rather pricey air rifle on a discussion forum Classified section. Not the same thing.

When I place a WTS ad, I want it to sell. I price it to sell and I don’t write demeaning copy in the ad. If I get a PM with a lowball offer I can simply ignore it or, most likely, I simply say no.

Can totally agree with both statements actually.

Anyway, he is free to do what he wants, but my view is “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”. He’s pissing off a component of his potential customers for what? So he can get exactly what he wants? How’s that seem to be working out so far? He MAY eventually sell it, but he’s been waiting an awfully long time…

Psychological people want a deal. Even if someone negotiates $50 lower, they feel like that got a deal. Shopping for used stuff, people definitely are looking to have the feeling of getting a deal. The ad basically tells buyers, come to the table on the seller’s terms and be the chump.

I can understand the frustration the seller may have experienced in the past... I don't see any issues with the ad. I can anticipate that he is a straight shooter and no BS involved in dealing with them as he seems direct. Is it harsh, maybe...? Is it true, IMO I'd say so. If that's the particular setup I'm looking for, I either have the money or I don't. Thats my opinion.

100% of the time, I will pay asking price if I feel it's a good deal on something I really want. I guess haggling is not in my blood, but I also know what I'm worth and willing to take when I'm the seller. My word is gold. If I say I'm going to buy something from you, I will follow through.

What I find most offensive is when someone replies and states they want your item, confirms and ask you to mark it sold, but when it's time to send the $$$, they ghost you or change their mind... Thats most offensive too me. This also goes for WTB ads where someone replies that they have the item you are looking for, but when you confirm the deal and go to pay their offer price, they get cold feet and back out. I don't have the time or energy for individuals who word means nothing to them....

The ad is not pleasant, but I do see a frustrated seller that most likely has been dealing with buyers for a lower price. It is overpriced for the market right now and I would be grateful for offers instead of putting an insult at the end of an ad. I saw the ad before this post and immediately moved on, one the price, two the way that ad was written at the end. It made me feel bad for whomever he was blanket insulting. If a buyer wants to spend his $2000 plus of hard earned saved money on a nice gun like that, I say bravo, I wouldn't insult him and say those things that were said. It's being a bully in reality. Words have consequences, even if you hide in the internet.

I have noticed that no one has put his name in this discussion, is there a reason for it? Is it against the rules? We aren't "helping" if he doesn't realize it's his ad. Maybe he only spends time in classifieds and needs to see the info. I won't link him, as I am not sure, but if it's not against the rules he should see this post, maybe it will help him see the light.

I really do agree with this. It's like TommyBoy and the warranty on the box psychology lol. However, with that being said, typically I will put a feeler out for a seller I don't know, but if I know the seller, have done business with them and they are respected, I either say "I'll take it" or I move on. Because I already know I am getting a nice product.

20+ YEARS on Forums and a primary reason i so seldom list items for sale.
You state PLUS SHIPPING folks offer you pay shipping, list price as FIRM, folks offer you less .... really a pain in the butt.
I take my sales private to the family of friends and folks I know ... set the price and terms & no arguements.

Only in America...

There have been markets since mankind could stand erect and carve out a wheel. Haggling is a worldwide phenomenon and as such, everything, everywhere is up for negotiation. I dont care if "firm" is in the post, I dont care if it says, "You pay shipping" etc. every item up for sale in any store is subject to bargaining but we 'yanks' are so awfully arrogant that we think that since we wrote it is a classifieds ad, it is now a rule.

I have never paid full price for an appliance or power tool, never. I can always get 10% off at Lowes, Home Depot of Menards and even more if I see the box is damaged or the tool is scuffed.

The reality is that a large percentage of the guns listed here get reduced if they dont sell, it is an admition that there WAS room for negotiation after all.

In the end, you do you, boo, Ill do me. Don't like my ad, keep walking but there is a REASON why commenting is NOT allowed in the classifieds, and this thread is THAT reason.

LOL. Need more context than “please read carefully”. I hope there is much more than that to it. I cant think of a classifieds but i can think of a company and i will jus post it. Airgun pro shop. All you have to do is go to the about us (or similarly named section) on their website and see what they write about “customers” and you may not want to do business with them. I know i won’t.
I read it. Lol! Tell us (them) how you really feel !

I had to go look at the ad. Sorry, maybe I am a crusty old fart, but I rather enjoyed it.
The seller is selling his gun for his reason and the price is set for his purposes and his alone. If you don’t like or agree with it don’t respond to the ad.
If you think the seller is rude and off putting look at this thread. The only firearm forum I belong to anymore would have shut this thread down in less than 5 minutes. Singling out a poster for ridicule shows a total lack of respect among members. Ostracizing and appointing someone the forum pariah should never be allowed.
We are supposed to be a community of people with similar interests. we can disagree about data, which guns are the best and how best to put a projectile on target, but it needs to be in a respectful manner, not like a bunch of school yard bullies picking on the kid with glasses.

Correct

...and as such, everything, everywhere is up for negotiation. Not so correct... There is always 1 seller in the equation but thousands of buyers if not more given the circumstance.

You the buyer do not dictate when I sell MY item. You only dictate if you buy it.

As the seller I determine the terms and conditions in which the item is given up for $ or barter for another item, in this case money only and $2800.00/$2500.00 without scope.

It is in fact a rule , a rule put in place by the seller , the only person who can dictate whether or not he sells YOU the item.

Unfortunately for you , you are not the only person who can buy. Thousands (just throwing a "number" out there) of others can buy said item, someone will likely follow the rules put in place by the seller.

If nobody does he has every right to alter his rules by lowering the price and can sit on it as long as he'd like till it sells, however when it hits a price you want to pay a couple weeks down the road, you are still just agreeing to his rules.

Yes, the qualifying comments are pretty juvenile. But, whether that is his personality, or whether he's had bad experiences with low ballers, I still read the ad for the salient points and ignore the white noise. After all, he's an air gunner, got to be an okay guy!
