Maybe I'm stating the obvious but firmware can't change the shape of the sensor, nor the shape of the display. My impression is the main advance these units have is that the sensor and display are circular discs now, rather than the "camera standard" rectangle.

I've been wondering when manufacturers would take this step. If your scope has a rectangular sensor it would make more sense to have a rectangular scope body -- the problem with that, though, is then you would also need rectangular lenses which aren't impossible but they're less standard. But scope manufacturers just opted for circular scope bodies even if they had rectangular sensors, which results in wasted space. But a circular scope body (cross-section) makes their scopes look like a "normal" scope.

Presumably getting a circular sensor was a significant investment, as they're far less common. That was likely the reason for this to be adopted relatively late in the game.
