The PVC, 1-1/4" Bore PCP air cannon????

Hello everyone,

I was talking with @rsfrid / Ross yesterday and told him that I had some serious withdrawals from not being able to do any shooting lately. I have both of my rifles up for sale so I don't want to shoot them. Over 1-1/2 months ago I sent my .177 caliber Pistol to be tuned, and still have not received it back :( . Then the "new" Reximex RP came in and it had a defect with the Fill Probe, so I sent that to be modified and not sure when I will get it back  .

Ross suggested that I make a Blow Gun. Well as it turns out I built several Air Cannons many years ago and they will shoot a 1-pound projectile vertically OUT-of-SIGHT . So this morning I set up a paper target tapped on a cardboard box out at 20-yards. I filled the cylinder up to 50-Pounds, yes 50-pounds, and blew a rather large nasty hole in the target o_O. The projectile went through the box and continued out another 35-yards where it hit an Oak tree and ricocheted across the street another 15-yards .

I feel so much better now, however I’m not sure how to score this target :ROFLMAO::p

Range: Outdoor 20 - Yards
Rifle: Air Cannon 1-1/4" Bore
Scope: No Sights
Pellets: Projectile 1-Pound
FPS: ??
FPE: ??
Wind: 3 to 5 mph

I think field target air artillery might be a good sport. Imagine a course with large ring targets, (maybe 5 or 10 yard diameter), set out to 800 yards or so and the goal would be to score an impact within the rings in as short a time as possible.
Hello @Sawney Bean

Some of my neighbors and myself used to set a 2-foot square open target out at 50-yards and shoot at it but we were tearing up the target frame too much. So we switched to setting out a 5-gallon bucket at 25, 50 and 75 yards. Then shoot the Projectile up in the air and try to land inside the bucket. Shooting MOA with a .177 caliber at 100-yards in ten times easier :ROFLMAO: .

Oh, you really should chrony that bad boy and add a red dot sight!
Hello @rsfrid

I'm afraid to try and shoot that Projectile through my small Chrony. The air vortex might suck the thing into pieces

This thing is scary. At just 20psi it will shoot the Projectile over 150 feet with the Cannon held at about a 15 degree angle. At 60psi we have never been able to recover or find the Projectile .

It looks very similar to the potato guns we used to make. The big difference was we powerd them with Aqua Net hair spray. It was set up the same with PVC, except we would spray the plenum with the hair spray and twist the endcap back on then used a Coleman lantern igniter screwed into the endcap to fire it. We used tightfitting potatos or apples for ammo. If pointed straight up it would shoot an apple clear out of sight. It was surprising how much power you could get from a couple of spays of Aqua Net LOL.

We used a plumbers propane torch to fill and set off. I'm surprised I'm still here...

I've made all manner of pneumatic PVC "cannon". This is the stuff radar chrono's were built for. I may have to build a new cannon anew. They could launch a fin-stabilized rod at fearsome velocities - now that I have the means it would be interesting to see what those velocities actually are...

1. Was your projectile sabot'd?
2. I can't believe ThomasT sent a rifle *out* to be tuned...

Hello @GeneT

1) No, the Projectile is made up using 2-each 3/4" PVC Pipe Caps ( Only certain brands will fit inside the 1-1/4" PVC pipe ) and a 3" long piece of 3/4" PVC pipe. Glue one cap on the pipe and then fill the pipe full with .177 BB's and epoxy, and the glue on the other cap. Solid as a rock and weights 1-pound. I also made them with no BB's and they are ROCKET SHIPS ..... wow :ROFLMAO:
2) The .177 is a Pistol and needed some fine tuning

How about some detail info on materials and how to build? I used to build lawn sprinklers.
Hello @mandn

Let me see if I still have the "build sheets" on this thing. I will look in my drawing computer and see if it is in there and at one time I had made a "How to Video" but pretty sure it is gone. I stopped using Youtube and I think all of that material was deleted.

I will let you know one way or the other.
