The true cost of owning a PCP

I thought we all just follow the standard formula of n+1 for number of guns necessary.

🔶GUNS necessary = current number of guns n PLUS one more

GUNS-nec. = n + 1

Yes, that's the formula, qball.

Well, one of them.

🔶There's that other one, about how many types of pellets are necessary per gun to find "the gun's perfect pellet":

PELL-TYPES-nec = GUNS-nec x 20

🔶And this one, too — about how many accessories are necessary....

ACCSSR-nec = GUNS-nec x 10

I just started a thread about buying a new gun, and everyone who answered recommended the RAW, so that's what I bought. O'doyle had answered my thread with a few of his guns and I asked him if he knew what he'd spent on his PCP arsenal and he said that he didn't have the nerve to figure it out, as it would lead to a heart attack. That's about where I am now as well. I'm 75, had a bad motorcycle accident a while back which has really limited my options for enjoying the out of doors. I figured I could shoot a pcp airgun in my yard and enjoy shooting again, and was right for once. Since I bought my Marauder .22 in April of last year, I've bought the following:

1. Marauder .22

2. Talon P .25

3. Air Arms S510 XS .22 laminate

4. Condor SS .25

5. Veteran Std. .25 laminate

6. Veteran Long .25 laminate

7. FX Wildcat III Sniper .25

8. This week for my birthday coming up soon, a RAW HM1000XLRT .25 tan...they sold their last camo before my order came in

I keep telling myself that this is probably enough, and my wife keeps asking me how many of these guns I'm going to buy...and I tell her I'll quit when they quit making guns that I want to own! AND, this doesn't include the accessories to go with these fine guns. My rationale is that I'm not going to take it with me so I'm going to enjoy it while I can since I can afford the hobby!

Imyourhuckleberry -- that's the way I see it to I could afford it now, I don't know what happened in a few years so the 8 guns I have now will be my retirement guns I have 2 more to go .. but waiting to se another manufacturer to make some cast bullet shooter aside airforce...if no body come with something will go with the custom bulldog route...

...which is your favorite so far...???...

...I once returned a Marauder w//o firing a shot...that is what I thought of it once I handled one...

...I did not do so with my .25 TalonP and in fact bought a 24" barrel for it...it wears my "best" scope...I do not truly love it...

...I seem to have a hard on for the S510...Yodoyal had buyer's remorse behind his...how do you feel aboot yours...????...

(...this is me right now...)

In the big scheme of things, airguns are actually not that bad... and that's even if you buy some of the "nicer" stuff out there.

- Buy them used/take care of them, and chances you'll pretty much get your money's worth if/when you decide to sell them.

- - Then they'll only cost you the pellets

Anybody else into motorcycles? Other than depreciation, ou can add another few hundred$ a year for tires/chain/sprockets. Another few hundred$ for insurance. Every few years, your riding gears will need to be replaced (that's thousand$ +). If you ride off road, there $ for the parts you'll break... But just like airguns, I think it's worth it... and still cheaper than a therapist 👴

Well I purchased this Impact-X in March of 2019. Below is what happened after that fact.

Impact-X $2,100

Aztec scope $440

580 cc bottle $350

Huma regulator $120

Regulator rod $30 It was bad from the factory

.177 barrel kit $400

.30 barrel kit $320

.25 barrel liner $110

Ergo Grip $40

Polish Plenum $170

STO Moderator $130

K&L Trigger guard $130

K&L safety $40

K&L ARCA rail $45

UTG Bipod $135

Mono pod $60

Valve body $35

Power Kit $40

Wika Gauges $115

Extra mags $270

Spare parts $150

Impact & parts $5,230

Compressors $700

Filters $100

Air tank $900

Pellets, slugs $1,045 19,000 rounds I have managed to shoot over half of these thus far.

Total $6,925

So be careful if you think that the addiction is going to let you off easy cuz I doubt that will happen. ;^)

So far in my 10K of rounds shot other than the regulator rod that was bad from the factory I have had to replace one o-ring and tighten both gauges as they leaked after a time. With the number of times I have had this thing apart for upgrades and mods I am more than pleased.

That is why I will have to stick to lower end PCPs like the Benjamin Fortitude, etc. As much as I would like something more sophisticated, I can't justify the $$$$$ for something that WILL have some/many of the same problems that a lower end AG will/may have.

Quality does NOT necessarily follow price when it comes to AGs, or anything else for that matter. Forget what you may have been told.

I used to build my own PCPs out of Crosman parts they were close, albeit slightly better in some ways, to what the Fortitude is. That was years before the Discovery and Fortitude even existed. But you really can't compare these guns to an Impact or any of the upper tier guns. Yes, they cost much more and yes, they are worth the extra cost. Only one small problem with the Impact in over 10K rounds. Oh, and a few others I did to myself, with my constant modding, of course.

For the most part, in the airgun industry, I think quality does follow price pretty well. It is just not that way all of the time. Also, there is a point of no return where allot of extra money doesn't get you much in return.

The true cost of owning my 4 PCPs, compressor, SCBAs, fill stations, etc., is never revealed to my significant other, she would be shocked at the actual costs. I love my PCPs the accuracy and convenience of shooting a lot has spoiled me. In it for the long haul as I love to shoot.

The true nightmare is that the wife sells your toys at the price you said to her you pay for them.

This is one of the most entertaining threads on AGN for me. 😊

It gives me warm fuzzy feelings. 😄

Probably because I feel the fellowship of other people as airgun-nuts as I am, as shot-crazy as I am, as far down the hole as I am....! 🤣 (Note: Where I live there are very few airgunners, I don't know any personally....)
