I feel like Air Venturi didn't explain it good enough. There are 2 common types of break barrels: Spring and Piston.I don't get it.
Why do you need a pump to tune a break barrel? You have to break the barrel and pump it up to fire a shot?
The spring type is just a large spring that gets compressed when you cock the rifle.
The piston type is a gas chamber that gets compressed.
If you wanted to increase the power of a spring type rifle you would need to swap the spring for a stronger one.
If you wanted to increase the power of a piston type rifle you would just need to increase the psi in the piston gas chamber.
The top uses a spring and the bottom a piston. The spring uses spring tension to push and the piston uses air pressure.
So on the OmniStorm...sigh... you connect the bicycle pump and pump to increase the pressure inside. This makes the gun harder to cock and increases fps on the rounds fired. The gas inside the piston is never used to actually fire the round, it's a sealed system, it's only there to push on the seal connected to the guns air tank.
Piston type airguns have many advantages but the disadvantage is it's harder to maintain as if there is a leak the gun becomes non functional whilst a spring type has very few failure points, it's just a large spring after all.
In the below video you can see how a piston break barrel works. As the trigger is pulled the piston pushes forwards pushing the air out of the gun.
This motion causes a very hard recoil which will damage and break many types of rifle scopes unless you have spring operated scope mounts.
