Things that some don’t see when shooting slugs out of a pellet barrel

I know most guys clean their guns with their favorite liquid and a pull through patch. When the patches come out clean I’m good. Not really. This is my Taipan CZ barrel. It gets cleaned after firing 100 lubed slugs. I use firearm lead and copper solvents with the barrel off the gun. The pictures were taken after I even use a nylon cleaning brush. I can get the lead out but it involves some aggressive cleaning tactics. I won’t toot the horn of the manufacturer that this doesn’t happen to but I wanted to put this out for the guys who might not truly know what they are doing to their pellet guns trying to be slug guns.

Great pics. I totally agree. I have to scrub the crap out of my Slug A liner to get it clean after over about 100 slugs... I usually take the liner out and run a bore snake with brass brush through the liner 3 or 4 times, then run patches until it comes out clean. With the Superior liner and same slugs it only took 35 or 40 slugs to get that dirty. FYI, the Slug A liner is polished to a mirror finish.

Have the same problem and posted couple weeks ago that slugs ruined my liner, maybe not ruined but definitely was the source of my lost accuracy of pellets and most said no way not possible they swap back and forth and never clean anything and that pellets and slugs shoot perfect! Well maybe so but not in my case and I only shot eight slugs.

Couple of smart fellas suggested lead in the choke, but I cleaned the liner over and over but patches and Hoppes#9 only. But after closer inspection with good light and magnifying there it was,,, heavy lead fouling! I pushed about ten pellets thru and that alone removed quite a bit but not all.

I saw a video where a guy used on a powder burner barrel a size down brush and wrapped a small amount of pure copper pot scrubber material around the brush, then scrubed the barrel back and fourth and the lead fouling was falling out! Im going to try it, as i have already installed a new liner and nothing to lose.

The point of this topic is not so much about the why, it’s more about the if. Just wanted to let guys know what could be going on inside their pellet guns while they are chasing glory. Now here is the bright side. Here is a TJ Slug barrel with way more shots through it. This is what it looks like the entire length after just a dry patch pulled through it. Both guns are accurate. Both guns are shooting a oversized slug. One barrel is a slug barrel, one is not.

I have ask that question a few times , Has anyone lost accuracy shooting slugs and then returned to pellets???

I never really have got an answer, But looking at the bores of the pellet guns that shot slugs, I am going to say I am glad I have not and did not slide down the slug hop/la

I always buy CZ barrels when I can, And I have always heard they were tight choked , Just taking peoples word that are smarter and have more gear than me,,

Speaking of barrels I do have a mystery 22 caliber LISTONE barrel that came on my MUTANT, I know nothing about other if you look up pin point accuracy in the Webster's dictionary Its got a picture of this barrel... ITS THAT GOOD, any thing you put in it, Anything.

Before I ever put any slugs through my FX STX pellet liner, I polished it well. When I couldn't get my Slug A to perform, I gave up and put the pellet liner back in, and to my surprise began getting 0.4" 70 yard 5 shot groups with H&N 23 gr. slugs.

Accuracy takes at least 100 shots, maybe many more, before it begins to fall off. I then give it 5 passes with a brush, then pull through tight but dry patches, because I've learned from firearms that solvents permit a patch to slide over lead, while a dry patch pulls on it. Takes about 5 patches to get one to come out clean.

Interestingly, it then takes 20 or more shots to season in and resume its former accuracy. I take that to mean that I am indeed removing lead, and that it takes a while to accumulate. Cut rifling I would expect to lead more and faster, and be harder to de-lead. But I've never bore-scoped my STX pellet liner.

How do you find the Daystate polygonal barrels with regard to slugs and cleaning?

Hello Everyone,

I am glad that we can still find time to enjoy some good times outdoors. Great pictures of the barrel, I was just wondering about a few things though. What weight slugs, what's the true diameter, how fast are you pushing them, and how do you feel about polishing the barrel? My BT-65 and Marauder both have a mild polishing on the barrel and seem to stay clean; I'm sure I have several hundred slugs down the barrels. 38gr to 51gr with fps of 970 down to 900. Tack driving Beast, with a lot of homework behind them.
