Three for the Day

What started out poorly turned out ok with three squirrels for the day with the Huben K1 .22.

Stew time!!
@ZekeZX10 Too hot for stew. I have three fox squirrels. I don’t really like them. I prefer gray squirrels so I’m frying them. If these weren’t stripping a pecan tree I probably wouldn’t have bothered them once I realized they were Fox squirrels. I shot one while trying to run overhead. The squirrel climbed the tree whose shade I knelt under and barked at me. I turned my head, looked at it, put my phone down, grabbed my K1 off of my bipod, and turned. When I turned, it started moving. By the time I was able to line up a shot it was over my head and running. Sent a pellet through one shoulder and out of its back between the shoulders adjacent to the spine. I shot vertically while kneeling and it literally hit the ground 3’ in front of me. Then I head shot it up close. That was crazy!

@ZekeZX10 I thought to bring the Tactacam, but I didn’t make enough time to set it up before leaving. What’s wilder is the last one I shot. I missed the first two shots. I was about 30 yards out and it was pretty windy. I don’t think the squirrel could hear the report, just pellets smacking branches. First it ducked behind a large limb where all I could see is tail. Then it disappeared completely. Next thing I know it pops up on a limb in the open an and is looking in my direction. I let one fly and knew it was a head shot because the impact sounded like someone kicking a hole in a cardboard box. When I went to retrieve it I found it shot in the face on the muzzle just above the whiskers. There was no exit wound.

When I skinned it, I found where the pellet was trapped beneath the skin mid-rib cage right side. The pellet is in the red circle. I mostly get pass throughs.

So looks like that pellet traveled a a good 4" or so thru bone and tissue...did it's job!

@ZekeZX10 At least 4”. Probably closer to 5”, but I didn’t measure. This is a pretty decent sized Fox squirrel, not a small gray squirrel. But yea, it shut her down. I’m satisfied with this type of terminal performance.

Nice shooting.
@DeanB Thank you.
Good shooting and nice damascus steel knife.
@Moog Thanks. I've abused this knife somewhat, but it's proven reliable.
Good job. I'm ready to get my new huben k1 in 22 out for some squirrels when it cools off here. What are you shooting pellet wise?
@drsquall Thanks. I shoot a variety of ammo. Today it was FX 25.4 grain. diabolo domed pellets. Last week it was FX 18.1 grain diabolo domed pellets with the same tune.

Wicked! Glad you got to put the K1 to use! What mod are you using? And what size is it? I tried using my Huma Mod 30 kevlar but it doesn't like sitting on the K1. It's not clipping but it'l throw fliers, it shoot 10x better without the moderator.

@JaceSpace Donny FL Tanto. It's 5" long. I don't know the diameter. I've used it on 4 different airguns and have no clipping issues.

I havent had clipping issues with my Huma on any mods before either but it's somehow causing turbulence. I believe the tanto is a bit thicker than the mod 30, the mod 30 is only 31mm.

Nice! I found that the 25.3gr FX shoot very well out to 100yds, as well as the 21.9gr AEA pellets

Good shooting and photos!
Wow that’s some impressive penetration.
@JakeRico Thank you. My shooting still needs work with this gun/scope combo, but it’s coming along. Out of 3-4 squirrels that have run overhead (directly or in proximity to me), one of the Fox squirrels was the first that I successfully dropped from that close. That had to have been an 8’-10’ vertical shot on while it was on the move. It happened fast too. Exciting stuff!!

Nice haul, gotta protect those pecans! Those fox squirrels look like they could be hybrids? The ones around here have white ears, are black on top of the head, and have a white blaze across the face.

Great shooting by the way, you and Dean continue to inspire!
@SteveV The way it looks pictured is how I’m used to seeing fox squirrels in these parts. Now I do occasionally come across some smaller gray squirrels that I wonder if they are hybrids. I’ve seen a tree where I thought that both species denned together so it’s possible. To answer your question accurately I think it’s best to say that I don’t know for sure.
