Tinker gun?

So after my last post about what gun to buy, i ended up getting the .25 cal umarex gauntlet... Its a great gun, very accurate,my wife and i love it and ive already replaces hammer spring, tank, etc etc.... And now, i want a gun about custom as possible with parts i dont have to 100% hand make. Ive seen some really insane pcp guns that people have modified. Is there a gun someone can suggest that has a lot of after market mods? im pretty new into the pcp game but VERY addicted already, as sitting around on lock down for months now i have nothing else to do lol

I mainly shoot black birds/targets around 20-60

The Benjamin marauder pistol seemed kind of cool from the pictures ive seen, but im not sure its a 60 yard gun...

My mind has been spinning for days as to what my next pcp will be

The full sized Benjamin marauder is widely considered the ar of the pcp world due to the wide range of aftermarket parts that are available to the platform. Everything from custom stocks to completely new actions can be found on the platform, With some work it can easily be made into a 100 yard shooter. The prod on the other hand would generally be considered a 50 yards and in gun. Of course you could stretch the range on the prod, however the mrod would be better suited for longer ranges. The mrod as a whole would more likely be better suited to grow with you due to the benefits of being a full sized rifle. You can’t go wrong with either just depends on the intended use.

I have more than $1300+ in a custom 22 Benjamin Armada not including the cost of scope and mounts literally everything done to it. It shoots just as accurate as my $700 straight out of the box Field and Target Marauder with more power. It's up to you if you want to turn a $600 gun into a $1300+ gun to keep for life so you don't lose money selling it. Looking back this was not a very wise thing to do because for that kind of money I would have a much better gun such as a Taipan Veteran or an FX Wildcat compact. But its all for fun right?

Here's another example a $150 Benjamin Discovery with a $125 multi shot breech $150 custom stock $200 machined Lothar Walther barrel $90 Marauder gen1 trigger group with spacer and trigger guard $125 Huma regulator $200 Hill power valve and TP and misc screws and seals $150 custom shroud and baffle kit to replace the crappy one included with the breech. So my $150 Benjamin Discovery cost $1190.00 without scope and mounts and it's almost like my $220 Benjamin Fortitude with a better barrel trigger and stock and at the end of the day it's still a Discovery for yet again the cost of a Taipan Veteran. All for fun right?

Next up a $300 22 Benjamin P-Rod With a $170 Marmot Militia Hammer forged barrel $85 AR stock adapter $140 AR collapsible AND side folding stock $200 Disco double tube $125 Huma regulator $80 Vernon custom grips $180 Hill power valve and TP and misc screws and seals $100 custom shroud extender with baffles. $1380.00 and not including scope and mounts and it's still a P-Rod. All in the fun! Yo!

Moral- A Friendly advice- save money make your own if you want to keep things less spendy. I don't wanna even think about what kind of a nicer pistol I could have bought with that $1380.00 I spent on my P-Rod (NOT INCLUDING SCOPE AND MOUNTS). OH I know a $1000 22 Ataman AP16 with that $350 cool as hell tactical modular side folding stock and dinner for 2. Good Luck. Yo!

Lots of aftermarkets for the Marauder so it is a great place to start but don't discount the lowly Crosman 22xx guns for modding. There are probly more aftermarket parts available for them than for the Marauder. I put a Custom Air repeater breech, an FX barrel, some paintball parts and modified the valve on my 2240 pistol and it shoots 1/2 groups at 50 yards. Although it did that with a Crosman barrel as well once upon a time but at least it weighs less now. So now my $60 pistol is a $500 pistol. It's all good and the 2240 now competes well actually bests my $1000 HW44 slightly.

With a cheap 2250 stock and a slightly longer barrel it could be a rifle.

Keep the costs within your budget and this is nothing but fun.

Come on guys where are the pics of these modified guns?

Holy hell man, now thats what im talking about. This will give me a lot of research for a few days lol. I guess i wasnt aware of all these after market parts... is there a few specific websites people use for most of these? from what ive seen its a lot of ebay shopping. Im so new to all of this.

Wow what a beautiful gun, and great idea. defiantly some thing to keep in mind.

Just buy an FX -- tinker seems to be required.

the fx impact 2 is pretty much my holy grail gun, thats going to take some smooth talking and a probably a new car to get the wife to agree to it.... Or, i go single and buy a new air gun every month.. still not sure hahahaha. kidding of course...orrrr.....yah kidding....

Here's a pic of my Mrod money pit😎

Lightweight air cylinder, couple different valves, regulator, shroud off Kral, bullpup stock.

I keep talking myself out of a new barrel because the green mountain. 25 is really accurate.

Marauders are a great platform to build upon, many directions one can go, with lots of part accessibility ranging from aftermarket to oem. For a sub 1k$ gun its a great 'tinker' gun.

Below, cheek rest holds 3 mags, adjustable lop, 5.2 lbs as pictured with an OAL of 34" with LDC collapsed, or 38" extended.. Custom LDC. Custom hammer/valve work, custom ssg, custom TP, modified gen 1 probe, custom front rail for bipod. My rifle is a 'tear down' that can have the gun broken down to a 24" length in just seconds for backpacking (have a custom backpack) I fabricated/modified most parts for the gun myself with a few sourced out to machinists.

One can spend 90$ on a reg, and a few hundred on other misc parts (or about half if DIY), and have an outstanding rifle for roughly 700-900$ provided you don't spend multiple times on the same part or buy overpriced aftermarket parts.

Or just buy a Kral, using hand tools open up the ports a little, a little barrel polishing here and there and you're done.

Very backpack friendly w removable stock.

These weren't available back when I got my marauder FWIW, but certainly there are many more options available now as the market has opened up A LOT in the last 2 years. But the part accessibility for Crosman is tenfold to that of kral, and this thread is about a tinker gun, not an open the box and be done with it.

I love my Mrod, and your skills in turning yours into what you ended up with are beyond those of most people who get into this thing.

Hell you came up with a lightweight air cylinder and your multi ssg system which I followed along with your posts, your extra plenum not to mention the customer stock.

Kral as a platform doesn't really need all the parts, and compared to the Mrod platform, even a hack garage diy guy like mecan work on them, I have 2 ofthem so far, but will be adding a bottle gun at some point.

Out of the box finit's fine, but with a little work, that anyone could do honestly, they are even better.

OK, so I have an Impact and a Marauder.

Do NOT buy an Impact as a tinker gun. they are delicate and finicky.

If you want an FX as a tinker gun, get a Dreamline. It's designed to tinker with and change configurations routinely.

However, for a tinker gun, my opinion (worth what you paid for it) is the Marauder rifle wins hands down.

The Marauder is an incredibly simple design, has three different adjustments, massive after market parts inventory with stores that specialize in Marauder parts, and a deep level of knowledge here on the forums. That knowledge is invaluable to make it shoot it's best.

In my case, XbowSniper lead me through the art of tuning mine with after marker parts including a new regulator. From the outside, you can't tell that it's modified at all, but on the inside, it's got after market springs, hammer, regulator and transfer port. It's tuned to be a good 75 yard gun putting out about 22 fpe. You can tune differently to get longer ranges, more power, or whatever. That's just what I chose to tune to. Best part is that since I'm a cheapskate, all upgrades came in under $175 including the regulator.

One modification I do recommend to a Marauder is to polish the inside of the air tube. Crosman punches out a number of holes to accommodate the valve, springs and other parts. They don't remove the burr. Get a large dowel, cut a slot down the middle, chuck it in a drill and put sandpaper in the slot and wrap it around the dowel. Work your way from fairly course grits to 1000 or so, and it's good. Otherwise it'll rip the new o-rings up when reassembling.

Back to the Impact - The Marauder has something like 8 o-rings in the entire gun. I think there are only 4 sizes of o-rings.

The Impact has something like 15 different sizes of o-rings and a total of over 40 in the gun. I've torn mine down to the bare essentials and replaced a lot of parts (don't ask how I damaged it, too embarrassing). Spent many many hours tearing it down and putting it back together.

Marauder, probably spent 12 hours on the whole thing, including tuning after the fact. Both guns are working now, but the Marauder has been so solid, it's ridiculous.

Just my opinion.
