TJ barrel on Evol 3 circular indentations near muzzle…

Hoping to get barrel gurus to chime in here…

There’s a general post re my new to me Evol (https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/evol-having-cardiac-arrest.1330307/#post-1947180), but the main gripe is this:

There are these three ring-like dents in the last 2-3 inches of the barrel… rifle is supposed to have less than 200 pellets through it, plus maybe 200ish from me by now… what the heck?!?

It’s shooting great until it’s not, meaning it’s grouping nice if you ignore the many many fliers it is throwing. Like it’s either spot on or 2 inch off at 45y, no in between. I guess there’s no saving this one, right?

I shoot a tj on my impact in 30. It's 1inch groups and under at 100 yards with pellets. It like the heavier pellets fast as you can shoot them accurate. 950fps and above. Everybarrel is different, but you may want to try.

That rough ring in the bore is the problem..The bore is pretty rough.. You could try hand lead lapping to remove the ring and rough spots with valve lapping compounnd starting at 120 grit.. My Lother Wather 34inch .510 barrel was horrible had a ring like yours 3/4 way down bore..I had to clean every 3 shots for any kind of accuracy.. I hand lead lapped with 120 grit valve lapping ,then240 grit sompound.. know that barrel shoots and cleans up.. The difference between production barrels and most custom match barrels are that match barrels are hand lead lapped after reaming the bore and again after rifleing.. Match barrels include krieger broughton Benchmark shieln Brux ect.. So you can try to work on rough barrel or buy another one.. I worked at ER Shaw barrels in Pittsburgh..I learned the basic barrel production process..

I personally don’t know what those features are. These fliers you described be could just as easily come from inconsistencies in the pellets or loose bits of lead working their way down the bore.
To me it looks like the way the choke is formed. Get something rougher than jb bore bright and hit that area for 20 to 30 strokes with the paste on a bore mop , clean then hit with bore bright for 30-40 strokes and see how it shoots. Also looks rough farther down and possibly has lead sticking
Not the pellets :) AEA are crazy consistent, I shot complete tins with my other rifles without a single flyer. The Evol throws 2-3 within 10 shots.

Seriously, look at the barrel, it’s obvious that it’s defective, these rings aren’t supposed to be there. I’ve never seen a barrel so screwed up and I’ve seen many :) it’s (supposed to be) a hammer forged CroMoly barrel and Tom polishes Evol barrels in addition. No way this is intentional/normal.

I may as well try. I have 400 and 600 grit here but I guess you’re right, that’s not good enough for something this deep. My only concern is that I’ll end up with a .23 bore at the muzzle if really get the rings out… like a reverse choke :)

As long as you pour a lead lap to the barrel you will be fine.. The other option i use on my Airforce plarforms is Air lapping...Stupid simple..Put the valve lapping compound on your pellets or slugs and then shoot through your perfectly clean barrel..I buy the lapping compound on ebay.. Sometimes a barrel sucks and you waste your time roll of the dice... I drilled 1000,s of .177 and .22 cal barrels that were all kind of off center..I often wondered if those barrels ever shot..Production grade is hit or miss.. It sucks getting a barrel machined for Airguns expensive..Out the labor and time.. Ive lapped quite a few barrels know and getting the feel for it. I also have the Tyslong digital borescope..Im not to good at uploading vidoes.. Im disabled and have time. I will hand lead lap your barrel for free .. I have casting pots set up for casting in the garage , and i have a good tipton rod i can use for 30 cal... Here to help

Really appreciate your offer and insight!!! I may trade the gun back (my trading partner is very sorry, he didn’t know and got the rifle used a bit ago as well so offered to trade back immediately). If I decide to trade back I’ll let him know that you made this generous offer!!
