To Scope Cover Or Not

I have a Vortex scope with flip caps on the varmint gun. They are good stuff. I've never had Butler Creek last a day in the field and ive bought a dozen pair. They are a great idea but the cap breaks off every time I use them.

I like the rubber bikinis. They seal out road dust and provide some cushioning on the scope rims. They are cheap so if you loose one it's no big deal. You can strip one off faster than flipping the caps too.

I prefer to use lens covers on all my optics, including cameras.
One thing I wish scope manufacturers would do is thread the objective lens like a camera lens, so you could screw in a filter. A simple, cheap, sacrificial UV filter up front and flip up cover at the rear seems like a no brainer. Maybe they already do that on some higher end scopes? Certainly not on the ones I own.

If you're a hunter and might want to get a quick shot off and don't think you'll have time for flip covers or the neoprene alternative, try the clear Butler Creek Blizzard flip caps. They are a great all around tool and otherwise flip out of the way for clarity.

I have flip up caps on all my guns. I've never broken one. I did have a Monstrum split once. Mostly I use Butler Creek. I did buy a few from Aliexpress and they were surprisingly good for the price.
Monstrums are splitters. Just like China grips on a mini bike. Not your fault. Butler Creeks are great. But you have to be careful with them over the last 10 or so years. They must have switched who makes them for them because they became much more brittle.

The older Vortex caps used to split after one year. They since have updated the rubber. I used that warranty twice for one of my Scopes. They also use to slip off to easily, so both problems corrected.

I have the new rubbery ones and I really like them. The hinge is tough and the plastic is supple. You can leave them flipped up and carry the gun without them breaking off.

I snag those flip up caps in the brush every time. If you don't close them up every time you reposition the rifle they're going to snap off. They will break at the hinge with the slightest pressure.

The Vortex flip caps are truly heavy duty and haven't been a problem at all. They have a cool cap to slip your dope card in too.

Leupold has a cool press in objective cap. It's a hard rubberized seal that snaps in. The last time I checked they had flip ups for their scopes too. I've never used them. Like Vortex they are probably proprietary to their scopes. They may fit on others IDK.

The Vortex caps are pretty decent, but how high the hinge is a deal breaker. They now live on my Weaver 3-15x50 tactical. Leupold does make a premium flip back cover that is proprietary to their scopes, but I was lucky enough to find one that fits the objective on my Nexus. I definitely prefer those over everything else. Very clean and low profile. To bad they don't make more flavors. I would love to put those on my March as both the objective and ocular is threaded.

I like neoprene covers. I’ve had too many problems over the years with flip caps. It seems like they always either lose a spring or just start falling off. Some bikini covers are OK and some aren’t. I like the rubber ones my Vortex came with. Overall though, I find that neoprene covers fit a wide variety of scopes, slip on easily and help protect the guns in the safe or in a 2 gun case if they bump each other.
