Took A Coyote That Was Threatening My Dog

Boy this one was full of emotion. This is why I got into air guns. So I could quietly dispatch threats to my family. I took the pup out, and I can see a brown figure absolutely zooming toward us through the woods behind the brush. Coyotes are a thing here, fairly large ones. So I knew the score. I am glad my dog listened right away and came right back in the house with me when I called her. So I went to my upstairs office where my .35 cal M3 Impact is on a tripod firing 93 grain nsa slugs at 920fps.

I opened the window slowly to my office and sat down on my chair. I could see the coyote retreat to roughly 50 yards. He seemed to have found some food, looks like maybe a rabbit. He felt safe at that distance. This is what happened next….

P.S. after that video I put one more in his head just to be absolutely sure and watched to make sure there wasn’t any movement.

@Jman4183 that’s a very clear video. Which optic did you use? Where’d the first shot hit? Since you’re concerned about sound impacting your neighbors, I assume that a rotting carcass may also be offensive. How do you dispose of the carcass In your situation?

I just returned from a walk with Buck. There is a forest preserve at the end our street with a walking path. We fouled a coyote’s effort to stalk a couple mallards in the creek.

Even if one could shoot a rubberband gun around here, no shot was presented. Maybe a running shot with #4 buck, but not likely in my experience.

I keep telling my wife that we need move to a place where these things can be dealt with properly and legally.

Great shooting! Looks like your are using a Thermnight, is this the 335r or the 635r?

Ahh close, using my pard td32x70. I absolutely love that scope. If I had to go to war I’d be taking that optic no question. I’ve heard allot of great things about the Thermnights like everyone else though. I use Picture in Picture for day mode/thermal.

To answer another question from Ezra. Normally I will only have to take one coyote every time the seasons change as when I shoot one the other ones Definetly know it and keep their distance for many months. But when I do need to down one normally I will use a contractor bag and put them into my wheely bin garbage can. This one however is quite a ways out there. Speaking with some experience from other kills 50 yards is way too far to stink into a neighbors yard. So I’m just going to leave this Particular one.

Someone asked me about fx hybrids vs nsa. So I used to shoot exclusively Hybrids. They are a great, accurate, and fun round for small game. I had to get a tungsten hammer installed to tune for the 93grain which are a hard hitting beast of a round. It just doesn’t compare in terms of penetration. I tried downing many coyotes with hybrids with not much luck. I hit one three times at close range and he got back up. The hybrids in my experience just open up leaving superficial wounds on tougher animals. Also the BC on the 93grains is much better. I personally don’t hold for wind even at 100 yards. They hit where you aim, especially with a good ballistic calculator and rifle.

All that said, it does take something out of me every time I have to take down a coyote. I understand it’s necessary to protect my dog. I also know they are beautiful animals that are quite intelligent. I will lose sleep over did I really need to drop him? As I won’t necessarily start shooting at every coyote I see. Just the ones I feel are a threat. So it’s tough for me.

So far so good with the thermnight 335r on my end. I got it for a coyote job I'm supposed to start tomorrow with my buddy. Have you thought about using the AEA HP Max .35, but I told him that it doesn't have the power spring installed and that the best lucks to shoot out of that gun are the hybrids because they are light, but because they are so light and they expand that they likely would not be good for the coyotes also, they are going around 800fps, and that's a 68gr. We're gonna use the Vulcan 3.25 as that's set up to shoot 34gr at 960fps with repeatable accuracy unlike the AEA given the lack of regulator.

Also, your empathy for the coyotes is still understandable, no need to lose your humanity. Just do what you need to, when you need to!

Very nice shot, especially from that angle. Congrats!

174 fpe did the job quickly. Very nice shooting.

I got 21 of them in my yard , since houses being built everywhere and farm land being sold off they been coming in yards and taking out pets , it started here 5 years ago my neighbor lost 4 of 5 small dogs , I shot one in my garden which was 3 feet away from taking out his last dog , i used my trusty edguns r5m 30 cal and my edgun r5m with mp slugs , since then I just got a rattler in 30 which puts out 175 fpe and I picked up king in 357 i have not shot yet , I got these to strech out distances I found my edgun in 22 is good out to 70 yards with 69fpr , my 30 about 90 , with the rattler damn it is now slinging 90 gr in 30 cal ,750moa at 100 ys that one is semi auto so can do massive damage i got this cause some times i get packs of them 6 to 8 waking me up , so i can take out multible with that platform I got 2 daschhunds so I got to keep them at bay I not going to lose my pups , they are so agressive here a month ago I had one come on my deck trying to get threw glass slider to get at my pups , they are no joke , and 4 mo ago my wife had one charge at her with dog

I believe coyotes breed March -April during this time they are very aggressive.

I empathize with you very much. When your pups are your family and your wife is scared to go outside at night you gotta do what you gotta do I completely understand. Nice set of rifles you got there! 90 grain in 30 cal? NICE. That slug must have pretty good BC? 750 MOA at 100yards? I have also seen the packs of them and thought of getting a semi or even full auto. Your .30 is full auto right? Typically I see the pack coyotes are a bit smaller so I'd bet you could take a decent few of them mag dumping hehe :). I am also jelous of your .357 King. I got a DRS in .25 which is ok. It has a more lightweight hunting rifle style that I can quick pick up and grab if I need to "guard" my pup outside.

Also Ezra I got him in the ear into his head on the first hit. It is a bit misleading on my Pard Optics video, as the aim point I see in the scope is very different than the aim point we see in the video. I actually had to hold under due to the steep angles at play. I am not even sure if the center point in the video is the real centerpoint that I see in the scope. It's fairly close, close enough. I could see the blood rolling out of his ear though. Kinda gnarly but that's how I knew. Then he settled down in a nice thicket, I couldn't see his head optically though I could with the thermal and gave him a final top of the head shot.

To anyone still watching this thread, This is the last time I had dealt with a Coyote. Again, usually when I kill one it is quite some time before they come near us again. This must have been November sometime. I included the night vision, thermal, and the final picture. This was a very large Coyote, even for around here. This lead me to question a bit if it isn't a wolf? Idk what the legalities are there so I hope not on one hand. On the other, if it's large enough to be mistaken for a wolf, definetly glad I got him out of my woods. This one if you look closesly I dispatched as it looked to me like he was trying to figure out how the gate worked. Where his friend behind him (that you can see clearly in thermal) just ran off after what looked to be a rabbit hunt. If coyotes don't bother me, or I should say "fear me" I leave them be. If they don't I feel like I have to cull them to make my family safer.

This sort of thing is crazy to imagine. I am thankful that I haven’t seen anything like this. I hope I do not unless I’m vacationing in a national park or wildlife preserve. Several folks around me let the lead fly pretty regularly, so there’s a no go zone for aggressive predators. I don’t even see them pack up on camera. I can’t imagine packs of coyotes roaming my property. It would be a literal “slug fest.” I understand that things are different in different states and municipalities, but damn, y’all are talking about packs. Keep dropping them you guys.

@Jman4183 Thanks for the reply. I figured it was a Pard. Which model you running?
