FX Tuning Question

Gents,

Quick question…does a good tune equal a low standard deviation? Or, putting it a different way, does a low standard deviation equal a good tune?

Tuning a .25 caliber M3 and it got me to wondering. Numbers are below. Target velocity was 890 with the 34 grain JSB.

Thanks!
Justin

Statistics is not my specialty, but I'll offer an opinion. Standard deviation, I think, is the measure of how much a set of values differs from the mean, an indicator of consistency. I have had some poorly tuned rifles display very consistent numbers. In some cases they were loud, and shot count was disappointing. In other words, they were inefficient. So, my answer, a well tuned rifle, absent any mechanical issues, should show a low SD. But so might a poorly tuned rifle, although probably for a shorter shot string.
