Tuning TX200 HC Inconsistencies

Howdy all. I have a .22 TX200 HC and I cannot get this gun to group with anything aside from 14.3gr Crosman Domed Ultra Mags. I've tried JSB 18.13s, 15.89gr, 13.43gr, H&N Baracuda 18s, FTTs 14.66gr in 5.53 and 5.54, and Air Arms Diabolo Field 16gr in 5.51. Every single one if those pellets I seem to have to force into the breech almost like they click in. The Crosman Premiers slide in normally like every pellet does on my 97K. Any advice here? Is this normal? I feel like it isn't.

How snug is your rifles breech lock up ? When cocked IS THE LINK floppy or snug ?

I'm assuming you are talking about this link. There is a bit of side to side wiggle but nothing crazy. The breech doesn't seem to move at all when cocked and loaded ready to fire.

First, try cleaning your barrel. It’s the first thing I did when I got mine. It wasn’t particularly dirty, but I do it to all my new guns. Mine is accurate with everything I’ve pushed through it so far, so maybe you have a burr or some build up in the barrel. The chrony numbers look good, so it’s gotta be a dirty barrel issue, or maybe your hold is changing. Remember it’s a springer, whether it’s manageable or not, you have to hold it the same every time. Also, does your scope have a parallax adjustment? If your cheek weld changes even slightly, and your parallax is off, it’ll make your groups look like they were shot by a Wally World break barrel!

Barrel is clean and hold is consistant, paralax is set dead on 50. I'm using a Hawke Sidewinder 30 FFP 4-16x50 which is dead on when I swap it back over to my 97k.

5 shot group 97K, FTTs 5.54 head size, 50yds. Not all groups are under a half inch but they are always under 3/4" assuming I don't pull a shot.

Best Group managed with the TX200, 50yds

Are my expectations to high for the HC? I've read it may not be as accurate as the full sized TX200 but this seems extreme. Every group almost always looks like this. 1 string to the left, one string to the right.

Stock screws are frequently checked and gun has been stripped down multiple times, piston seal looks fine.

Having owned several .... they are a Spring piston gun and will never shoot PCP accurate, especially in .22 caliber IMO.

As too the SNUG breech .... feather it out a bit at the initial bevel / leade area and other pellets will indeed load less notchy feeling.

Thank you for your help. I will clean up the loading area a bit and see how it feels afterwords and I guess keep shooting it to see if maybe its just me not being used to the gun. I appreciate you taking the time here!

I like this guys videos. He didn't do much better at 31 yards with his HC.

I don't know if I feel better or worse now after watching that haha. I want this gun to be the tack driver I know it can be. I'll heed your other advice also and just keep throwing pellets down range. Maybe it is just me

Back in my gunsmithing days, I specialized in TX 200 and SR models, the SR models came thru frequently with a burr just inside the chamfer at the start of the barrel where the pellet is loaded. I use a tear drop single cut carbide burr to rechamfer that taper then follow up with a cratex bullit to give a slight polish. This cured almost all the inaccuracy problems in TX barrels. You are only removing a very small amount of material, just enough to reshape that lead in taper and remove any slight burr inside, that would deform the pellet head. The hard to insert the pellet is the telltale to this issue.

I think you may be onto something here. I loaded a couple 5.54 FTTs and fully seated them. I then pushed the back out using a carbon cleaning rod for inspection. This doesn't look right to me but I'm no gunsmith.

It is AN ISSUE with any barrel that must accept a projectile that has an interference fit between the I.D. of bore and O.D of said projectile.

In a rifled barrel ideally the O.D. of projectile is no larger than O.D. of rifling Groove. In a PELLET this smaller diameter LAND of the barrel must DISPLACE areas of the pellets O.D. for it to pass threw it. These points of contact ( Lets say a 12 groove LW barrel ) IF THEY CUT THERE WAY across the head and skirt will create 24 lead shards of lead from the pellets head and skirt.

* If the barrels leade is a SMOOTH TAPER these 12 points of contact actually DENT / COMPRESS the lead which does create some displacement of lead and the resulting chaff/dust, but makes the pellet actually somewhat snugger within the bore than if the points of contact were cut.

This dynamic of compression rather than cutting keeps the pellet much more symmetrical and error free in YAW. For if the rifling is cutting and NOT doing so perfectly even at all 12 points of contact the pellet will be placed in a state of YAW and it will continue all the way out the barrel and wobble in flight towards target.

This is just a small snippet of barrel goings on in my own words and thoughts .... Read and understand it within the scope of this threads questions asked and the conversations nature.
