I haven’t posted much here of late but this seems especially worthy. Panthera 600 .22 has been my go to bench/slugger for the past 18mos. It shoots well and has proved reliable, so there’s no reason to dislike it. I guess I can say that the trigger annoys me some, but that doesn’t explain my souring on it. It’s something chemical.

I took a chance on replacing it with a Taipan Vet Tactical 2 long, in 22. A bit of a gamble because these days, I buy my .22 and .25s to work with my Altaros slug fetish, rather than the more conventional approach of finding the right slug for the gun. It’s an expensive approach, and I couldn’t find any info on the Taipan .22/Altaros fit, although there seems to be good results in .25.

I also understand that a good few people find it to be an ugly duckling. I get it, but to me it’s at least an improvement on the Panthera. It’s certainly nicer to handle and less things will be knocked over in my house. In any case, I’ll spare those of you with allergies from any pics of the Taipan.

Following arrival, barrel was cleaned and it was topped with a Vortex Viper PST Gen 2 in 25X, sighted in and chronied with Javelin 26g. It was running them at 960-970 on the stock tune. I set up a block of duct seal at 50y to check accuracy but it was not pretty - 2-3in spread. Cue that sinking feeling. I quickly grabbed the Altaros 32 grainers. Fortunately they were running right at their sweet spot of 890fps. The first good omen. Then, without adjusting the zero from the Javelins, the Altaros hit the (grain of corn) bullseye right away. Pure fluke but another good omen? The vet also felt and sounded better. Perhaps the 218 Javelins are a little too wide.

I cleaned up the target and placed 1/3 of a grain of corn as the bull and set about a group at the same 50y. First shot smashed the tiny piece of corn and #2&3 either went in the same hole (or I was sunk). Then the world’s unluckiest mouse popped up just behind my target. Omen #3? The perfect headshot let me know that 2&3 were likely in the same hole, so I returned to the target for two more. The last two were nerve racking shots but oh boy, that trigger is sublime.

Quite a start for the ugly Taipan. It’ll need to prove itself at longer range but so far, it seems very promising. It may be my first slugger that needs no tuning out of the box.

I hope it holds up out to as far as you plan to shoot it. The Taipan has my favorite shot cycle of any airgun I ever owned. My Standard .22 was a slug gun briefly but I was leaning on the gun a little more than zero parts availability would allow. During that short time it also was my most confidence inspiring slug gun based solely on its shot cycle. If it stays on point at longer distances, you’re going to be a happy man.

No matter what it looks like.

Ditto on the shot cycle.

Last month I won one of the EFT Grand Prixs using a first gen Vet 1. Nice and calm shot cycle for a 52fpe gun. Much more chill to shoot than many of the other 50+ fpe platforms I've tried.

The only reason we don't see the Taipan name at the top of more high profile competitions is because the company lacks the marketing juggernaut process we see from some of the other airgun manufacturers.

Taipans marketing strategy is simple: performance. None of the sponsored shooter rigamarole and/or YouTube 💩.

Thanks for the positive responses. I was surprised by the lack of info. I also considered the Vulcan 3, but didn’t want to gamble with that ping.

So far, I have only used the single shot loader and I’m inclined to keep going. It’s got some kind of Zen going on with the smoothness and feel of the lever going back and forth.

I shoot mine with the single shot lray 99% of the time.

If we were in a beauty contest our Taipans wouldn't win. Good thing I didn't buy mine to look good but to shoot good which damn do they ever. I've owned many airguns top to bottom in pricing and I find Taipans to give one of if not the best value for your dollar. Fantastic shooters, amazing shot cycle and one of the best triggers in the game. Also very efficient on air. And built tough enough to handle what I put them through. Again after all the airguns I've owned I sold all and bought 2 used Taipan Vet 1s. Only thing lacking is a forward cocker other than that I miss nothing compared to any airguns I've owned costing way more. And I don't care one way or the other on the forward cocking with how smooth they are. I bought 2 to have parts if there ever were a problem down the road. However I will probably buy a Vet 2 if one would ever go down and not able to repair it. Congrats on the gun man! I think you should post pics regardless of what others think how it looks. I know people aren't a fan of Skout airguns looks but they're also shooters so not hurting their sales either.

I never considered the Taipan Vet 1 ugly. Seemed simple and to the point. The skeletonized approach does put some off, but there are others whom push that look even more than the vet. Still, the initial day I first used my Taipan short, I'll never forget ... what a smile it put on my face and that giddy feeling of joy & excitement. Jumped back on this forum and sounded like an kid again. Yeah, what a treat it is. Since then, come to find out a lot of long running AN members have a taipan or two back in the collection with praise for them as well.

Yes, yes, YES! First shots at 100y, including the first shot after resting overnight. Very slight breeze. That would be in the top 10% of groups from my Panthera, as would the 50y group. Methinks that veteran barrel might really be liking these slugs. I might be happy enough to post a pic of the gun too!

That kernel is saying "whew... thank God for that breeze!"

Nice shooting!

Beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder and the looks of the Taipan Veteran definitely grows on you. Some people say it's ugly but I have yet to find a gun that's more perfectly suited for my use case. I love its efficiency, durability/reliability, and no nonsense design.

Wondering if a Mutant standard would drop in that chassis stock. I really like the look.

Yes that shot cycle. It's hard to explain what happens after the trigger is pulled . But it's pure magic .

And yes that trigger. Like the OP said it is sublime .

OP , looks like the Vet2 found the right home . Good to know its working well with your 32g slug of choice. Nice shooting and the mouse was a good omen for sure. Looking forward to more results with the Alteros .

Don't have a Taipan and likely won't - don't think that they are available in Canada. Agree that it is UGLY though ;)

But then, small groups and consistent shooting is BEAUTIFUL ...and you can't see the gun while you are looking through the scope :)

Nice shot on the mouse! I have voles crossing the shooting lane (at a run) all the time and haven't got one yet. Deer are a problem as there's nothing more startling than a sudden scope full of brown hair when you are not expecting it.

No complaints about my Panthera, totally happy with it. Enjoy your Taipan!

Cheers!
