How do you guys and gals manage to use these ultra thin reticles in such a variety of conditions and backgrounds? Modifier disks or something like that?

A lot of us DON'T ..... ultra fine reticles get lost if not due too poor contrast against the targets color or texture ... but lost in low light as well. Illumination can and will help in some situations of low lighting where other times it's near useless.

Hunter class shooter using a tree reticle? that i can understand. But these specialized jobs appear as some kind of slightly overdressed bench gun reticles. Yet FT shooters of note were brought in to help design them. There’s something I’m missing here. Thinking it may have to do with the distances?

I had a Discovery first focal plane scope and I found it quite difficult to get a quick and easy focus on crosshairs and target at low power. The reticle was simply too thin to see clearly with older eyes. At the ranges we shoot, most hobbyists don't need ultra-fine crosshairs. We're happy with five shots in one hole...we don't require hole in hole accuracy as in competitive shooting.
That being said...your mileage may vary, but it's good to have choice! Determine what/how you will be shooting before you drop major money just to have the latest greatest development in a new scope. "Simple" may be best for what you do with your pcp.
Personally I enjoy an inexpensive UTG Compact Swat 4 -12 X at sub-$100 over the $200+ Discovery scope. It simply fits how and what I'm shooting at, and for, and how far.

A usable reticle along with good glass, excellent ranging qualities (snaps in and out), side wheel availability and a 16X power line are all necessary features of a good HFT(US) scope. Makes the search interesting as not many check all the boxes. Uj

There is a VERY BIG distinction between "HUNTER" or "WFTF / OPEN" scope use / applications. In Hunter ( AAFTA rules ) we're limited to 16X and can not adjust turrets / clicking during the match. All POA changes from Zero are done via scaling of the reticles hold points. In the other classes you can use any mag power you want and also cllck / adjust turrets which when using a fine reticle at HIGH X powers is far less small looking relative to what your seeing for target features that may obscure the reticle if at lower x power.
Also when you click turrets your always shooting off the X center of reticle unless holding for wind at all ranges. A well ILLUMINATED center X of reticle at HIGH magnification works incredibly well. Sadly not the case in Hunter classes for most at the 16X or lower magnification.

I bought a Aztec 5-25 scope for FT use and for me the reticle is too fine and way too hard to see on black or shady targets. It now rests on a .25 cal plinking gun. Reinstalled my Sightron SIII which I still love, although they are a lot more expensive, but not nearly as costly as Nightforce, S&B, etc.....

Agree ... My AZTEC 5-25 now sits on the .17HMR varmint rifle. The center DOT tree reticle is ideal here in broad daylight on furry critters.
