Umarex Gauntlet: Barrel Shroud Support (Video)

Hey guys!

It's time for another Umarex Gauntlet Hajification video This time we address one of the biggest gripes most users have with rifles of this configuration, the free-floating barrel and barrel shroud. When the shroud is hit or bumped while hunting the POI changes requiring the shooter to resight the weapon.

My solution is a 3D printed component that clamps onto the air bottle and supports the barrel shroud. The bottom of the clamp also has a small section of Picatinny rail for a flashlight or pointer. Do not mount a bipod or rest of any kind on this as it will directly change your POI higher as the tank is directly connected to the barrel by the band. If the bottle is pushed up, so is the barrel.

I had a feeling you were working on something like this when you were curiously quiet on the subject when I mentiond it in one of your posts
Im glad I haven't made my baffle order yet, gonna have to add a little more for this well thought out goodie.
This will address the one ( as I see it) draw back of an out of the box gauntlet.
It can be quite annoying, but I doubt Umarex will do anything about it now that its in full production.
I am still loveing my .22 gauntlet although I havent had much luck with the crossman premire pellets.
I have 2 diffrent tins of 500, the first one the skirts were to wide and they needed a smack to set the bolt, the second chambered great and shot a little better, but not any good past 25, and not great even closer.your targets on the other hand are stellar! ( your accuracy post with the modified 1" squares at 50Y)
Oh well just have to weigh sort em-each tin has 10 diffrent grain weights any way stickn with the 18.13 jsbs till the next ammo order!

I bought over 20 tins of the Crosman Premier Ultra Domes 14.3 because they shoot so well in so many PCP's that I have. I LOVE em!

UPDATE 1/31/2018

I have received many reports from HP Barrel Band users that when installing the Barrel Band on their rifle, they were required to push the barrel down over ¼” to install the barrel band. I quickly deduced that the manufacturing tolerances for the Gauntlet are very loose. Some users were able to install with minimal barrel movement 1/32” while others were a ¼”.

Once I received more than one report, I swiftly asked for measurements from as many users as I could so I could redesign the Barrel Band with a closer nominal size to fit the Gauntlet. I want to take a moment to explain that because the manufacturer is producing this rifle with such a wide +/- tolerance I can only get close when producing these Barrel Bands short of custom designing and producing per rifle. That would just not be practical.

In order for me to minimize complications, I will need to know the top of the tank to the bottom of barrel shroud measurement as shown in the photo below at position 'A'.

I am making the redesigned units and distributing them free of charge in a good faith effort to minimize the inconvenience that is caused by circumstances beyond my control.

I think that the reason this is happening is because what I noticed when I took the shroud off the barrel, the shroud tube was not perfectly straight. It had a bow in it. So depending on where that bow is, it will give you different 'A' measurements. The good thing is that every time you take off the shroud and then screw it back on, it lines up in the same position.

Great point and during some of the measurement exercises I asked the owner to degas the rifle and rotate the bottle 45° and measure each time until 360° was realized. I also asked that the same test be performed on the shroud as well. Changes in the measurements were nominal. I also had a few users re move the two barrel grub screws and wiggle the barrel to be sure it was properly seated int he breech. Once wiggled the fasteners were re-torqued with no affect on the distances. During these sessions I also asked for barrel dimensions and there was a swing of over .5mm there as well. The collar are the breech end which fastened to the barrel was loosened twisted back and forth and then re-tightened as well. I was hoping to find an assembly issue to explain the inconsistency and was not able to find it.

It was suggested that maybe worn tooling during the manufacturing process be the cause.
