Upgrades? Red Wolf HP .22 purchased June 2018

I've been away from these discussions for a good bit.

I recently learned of the upgraded battery for early Red Wolf models - to a 3-cell. Just requires a new connecting wire to the GCU-1.

At the same time, I learned of the new GCU-2, which offers more power. I might enjoy having more power in my Red Wolf HP .22.

Can anyone tell me if the upgrade to the GCU-2 gives a noticeable improvement in power/velocity? Any idea on the cost of the GCU-2?

Also - are there other parts of my 2018 Red Wolf that might be outdated or benefit from an upgrade of some kind?

I live in Arizona... about an hour's drive from AOA, where I bought the Red Wolf.

The parts list for upgrade:
GCU2
Hardened hammer
exhaust valve
Replacement for safety block flat spring( I used an oring in mine)
Battery
Battery cable
Programming

The power availability increase is substantial... from a max around 940 w 25.4s to near 1100. There is also a bottle block mod that can further increase power and simultaneously increase efficiency.

The newest Gcu2 software also has other benefits besides power but I can't list them for you as I've been using Heliboards for a good while.

I spoke to Shane, the current prices are GCU 2 $395.00, hammer $50.00, 11.1v battery $50.00.
Thanks R.

I take it that the hammer is the only hardware change that's needed to handle the higher power offered by the GCU 2 and 11.1v battery?

I would guess that they take a dim view on using a Heliboard instead of the GCU 2?

I sent an email, a couple of days ago, to AOA, asking for information on what was required, and for a price quote. Haven't heard anything back yet. I guess they must be pretty busy.

From what Shane told me, yes the hammer on the Gen 2 Red Wolf is nitride coated, the wave spring is replaced by an o ring and you need the 3 cell lipo battery as the GCU 2 requires 11.1 volts vs 7.4 for the Gen 1. I am not sure if there are any other differences. As stated earlier, the power gains are quite significant, it takes a 50ftlb rifle up to around 65ftlb plus.

Besides a power level increase and magazine countdown, the new GCU2 gives you several choices of magazine sizes, including 13. You also get to pick when you want the gun to power down, the length of time the LCD screen stays lit and also a total shot count that will tell you how many
shots you have taken until you reset it. I am not sure if you will have to change to the self indexing magazines or not. If so, your older magazines become worthless.

Thanks Marv. Appreciate your info.

From Shane... total cost to upgrade GCU-1 to GCU-2 is around $800, including the labor of programming the new GCU-2. Not worth it, to me. Would rather put those funds toward acquiring a bullpup-style rifle. My Gen 1 RW HP .22 has all the power I need it to have, as is.

On the other hand, going Heliboard would cut the total cost of upgrade by about half - much more reasonable cost if wanting to boost the power of the Gen 1 RW.

FWIW - I just bought, but have not installed the Heliboard. Cost was about USD 280 based on that days exchange rate. The three cell battery can be had for about USD 20 off eBay - hammer upgrade, well that would be AoA so USD 50. Cost definitely half of sending it to AoA with some more flexibility.

Just wanted to muddy up the water some ;)

Yes indeed.... AOA only needed for hammer replacement. Overall, at least half the total cost with heliboard vs. going to AOA for the GMU-2 upgrade, tuning, etc.

Actually... the only parts you HAVE to have are a battery cable, battery, and board... the Heliboard being the more economical of the two. The hammer is recommended for higher powers as it will start to peen with a lot of shooting. The flat spring will break at some point but an oring gives good tension for the safety block. The newer valve stem is also recommended because it gives more support to the return spring to help keep it from jumping out of the pocket on hard valve strikes.
