I don't mind buying used items sometimes to save money but I'm finding that used scopes for sale are either few and far between or priced close to new. Or haven't I given it enough search effort? So far I've only looked on the classifieds here, Yellow and eBay. The latter seems like a good source, especially since they are not prohibited there. Any other sources? I've been looking for something in the 10-50x range for strictly target shooting.

The thing is you're not going to "wear out" a scope. A well cared for scope that is 5 years old is just as good as a brand new one. The only things you need to worry about assuming you can stand a blemish or two on finish are things that ruin a scope like scratched glass, non functional turrets, etc, etc. So think of it from the sellers POV, if I have a 10-50x60 scope that's five years old and is in excellent condition with only a few blemishes that I paid $500 for, why shouldn't I ask about $500 for it? So be careful if you find something used for a lot less than new, there is likely something wrong with it... if possible request a box test of the scope before buying or get something in writing that you can return it if it fails a box test.

Try Benchrest.com or Target Talk . If you post a wan to buy post on Yellow you are almost certain to find a few . What price range are you looking at ?

My current limit is $1200 unless there is justification to spend more. But I would like to be at $800 if possible. My biggest obstacle however is determining the correct scope for my needs.

Well that'll buy a Lot of scope ! List your needs an you'll get 50 different answers . My best advice is stay with the more established names . And try not to get sucked into the " perceived" need to extreme magnification. Sometimes less truly is more . 40 power magnification is useless if the resolution is bad . But like I say , it's mainly what you looking for that's good starting point

I just found a "Open Box" Hawke Sidewinder on Amazon. I already bought a Frontier from the same vendor and it was perfect. Saved $75.00

I found a 4 -16x Tasco vmt scope and a "White Tail" 8-32x at a local pawn shop, 20.00 each. They both have AO and target turrets. Not a bad deal.
