Used tank...

"T3PRanch"CF Tanks have a 15 year life span. New with 15 years they are top dollar. As they age and have less of the initial 15 years left the price drops significantly (Particularly those with only a few years left). I picked up my 75 cu/ft tank on e-bay with 2 years left of the 15 for $80 delivered.

As a matter of fact, I never even thought about buying a used tank, up until you pointed it out. : )

That said, can I buy something like this and just add the appropriate valve to it?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carleton-4500psi-60min-SCBA-Carbon-Fiber-Cylinder-air-tank-Mfr-Date-2003-6109-/302017186813?hash=item4651a08bfd:g:zhgAAOSwqfNXjFus

If so, how do I know what valve to get?! Can someone point one out?!

One more thing...

If the tanks have a life span of 15 years, what happens after the 15 years?! I mean, I found food in my fridge that was way past the expiration date, and it was totally fine. Same goes for medication. The date on the box is just there to make more money and to limit the manufactures liability.

That said, has anyone used a tank past their life span!?

thanks,

Georgios

After 15 years the tanks can no longer be filled by commercial entities (dive shop, Paintball store etc).
I fill them myself and they do not leave my private property so it is not relevant in my situation.

The tank you linked has a valve unfamiliar to me (seems a bit high in price too). Look for Scott Airpack tanks.

I took a Scott and replaced the entire valve with a slow flow valve from Air Venturi which also has the bleed valve, gauge and fill hose / female foster attached.

15 minutes after posting, I thought about the same thing... you can still use it, but no commercial place will fill it. In my case, I have to rely on that, as I do not have my own compressor.
I don't know anything about tanks, but compared to other tanks on eBay, that one looks priced right. Anyhow, it is all relevant, I guess. : ) I also just checked Scott Air Packs and did not see anything that looked "better" than the one I posted. Anyhow. Where do I get valves that fit those kind of scuba bottles?!

thanks,

Kmd

p.s. As we speak, I am going to Google a bit and see what I can come up with. : )

X27The tanks you referenced on eBay were made in 2003 there good for 2 more years for that price I think you are getting ripped off.

Interesting. Never broken it down to 'time left'...

Let me think for a second... I believe that tank cost $1500 bucks new. That's $100 per year. So 2 years left for a hundred bucks seems fair. I guess, Ha ha.

A "normal" tank goes for $700. Not sure if that includes the valve, an adapter and shipping!? Anyhow, that's $47 rounded up. So, two years would be worth around $94 bucks, so $115 bucks is not to bad.

Having said all of that, I appreciate the input. 😊😊😊

If you keep an eye out you can get a really good deal on eBay. Last year I picked up three MSA tanks manufactured 07/2012 for $150 each shipped. Two 88 cf and one 66 cf.

With the tank you are looking at by the time you add the new valve, fill hose, and new hydro test you could easily be in the $350 range. A tank with a standard SCBA valve and making your own fill adapter will be more economical.

The problem is that I am so impatient, ha ha. I "need" something now. Too bad I ruined my hand pipe... Anyhow, I guess you are right though.By the time I get everything I need, it will be too much for what I am getting... What about new ones?! Do they come with everything you need?! For example:

http://www.airtanksforsale.com/

That site must be the most confusing website on planet earth?! LOL. It looks like everything is included, but I cant really tell.

or something like this:

Looks like everything is included?!

Thanks a million,

There's different schools of thought on what to do after 15 years. DOT says you have to remove the valve, drill hole in the bottle, and dispose of it. Some folks like to keep using them if they can get them filled. That carries a risk to it, as the bottle may not warn you before it fails and you won't be able to get it tested anymore. I thought I read that in Europe, they use these types of bottles for 30 years. That's a pretty significant difference and I'd be curious as to the reasoning behind the US being only 15 years. Are they truly the same build? I don't now.

Replied to PM...

Interesting. I had no idea that in Europe you can use a tank twice that long?!

When it comes to what the reasoning is behind the US only "allowing" 15 years is pretty obvious to me. MONEY, as with EVERYTHING here in the US. Kind of why some countries want you to renew your passport after 5 years, instead of the widely used 10 years... So they can charge you more often.
