Very rare animal

Just not sure were to post this, But when I was a kid 50 years ago there were H/T everywhere, Now I might see one or two a summer,
Not sure you can see it , But tell me if its rare in your area?

Used to see them all the time in SoCal. Pretty rare now. Development destroyed a lot of their habitat and pesticides killed off their ant food supplies. Cool pic!

I haven't seen them in south Florida, more of a south west lizard I believe. looks like they have been in decline in Texas.

its a horny toad lizard i used to have one as a pet 58 years ago.

Yep, they use to be all over the place here in Texas…..not so much anymore.
Don’t kill them…..they eat tons of insects and don’t hurt a thing.
Check out the TCU mascot.

Yep, I remember catching those as a kid while visiting relatives in Eastland Texas. We called them horney toads.

Horned Toads, when I was a boy they were all over the barrier Islands near Charleston S.C.

Used to catch horney toads all the time over at Malibu state park.
Great little pets that can shoot blood from their eyes when aggitated..freaky!
fed them meal worms..them let them go

They are pretty common here in SE New Mexico, just saw one a couple of days ago. Sometimes I'll run across these little tikes.
The one on the left is the smallest I've ever seen.

Haven't seen one for ages here in California-there are bluebellies and alligator lizards everywhere though.

When I lived in San Diego, decades ago they were plentiful, loved them.

The problem is that people were catching them and keeping them for pets along with the pesticides and developments. That's been a problem for decades and they are protected in at least commiefornia.

We have a huge number of lizards, but I don't know if I've ever seen a Horny Toad here. Many moons ago, when I was in the Corps they were all over 29 Palms.

I lived just outside of Dallas TX as a young kid from '70-'75 and never saw one, lived in the suburbs. I saw a couple horned toads in TX on family vacation in Big Bend national park where I became intimately familiar with a massive prickly pear cactus when my tour horse threw me and ran offf when a rattlesnake rattled. Second day of week long vacation, got to spend a couple nights in hospital and rest of week just laying on my stomach in trailer popping pills. They pulled hundreds of spikes from my back, I landed hard in a giant outcrop of prickly pear on my back. Only good thing about that vacation is I got a helicopter ride to the hospital, gladly would have missed that.
