Veteran .22 Loves NSA .216 20.6gr

Well, I ordered some sample slugs to see if my new Veteran Standard .22 likes to shoot slugs. I ordered the following. .216 20.5gr, .2165 20.5gr, .217 20.6gr, .216 23gr, .2165 23gr, .217 23gr.

I shot them at 20 yards (all the farther I can shoot in my shop), to figure out the best slug to use. Turns out my gun REALLY likes the .216 20.5gr slugs. I shot 3 groups with those slugs and 5 shot groups measured center-to-center .02", .03" and .03", about as close to "one hole" as you can get. Seems my gun likes these even more than the JSB 18.13 pellets!

Now to place a big order at NSA!

Your thread title mentions 20.6 gr..NSA Your text mentions 20.5 gr. NSA . And according to me NSA does not produce any of these weights. Double check ?

You're right. 20.2 grain.

I need to run these over a chrono to see what speed these were shooting at. I set the hammer spring to shoot JSB 18.13gr pellets at 890 fps and didn't change anything. These slugs were hitting higher than the JSB's for some reason, so I wonder if they were going faster.

And when you see your velocity, which will be 745fps, you might also not be so happy shooting them. Then you will start cranking everything up on your gun and find out it won’t send them any faster than 840fps. Trust me I know. It’s a very tough gun to be able to have it shoot pellets and slugs at a worthwhile speed without having to tear the gun apart to reset the reg.

Hello, is your gun with a LW or CZ barrel?

No..the 20.2 nsa’s will definately fly a bit slower that your jsb 18.13 . The reason why they hit higher is their better Ballisitc Coefficient ( BC). Despite what many people think ,slugs do not always need to fly fast to group well. Just try them first with you current settings and see for the results. I prefer the nsa 20.2 at around 940-960 fps-ish because of the flatter trajectory at higher speeds. But it depends on your intended use if that is an issue for you . Playing around with different ammo and tunes without using a chrony though is not a good option .....

indeed 20 or 30 metres is not optimum distance to test your grouping but one hole at your distance gives a good indication that longer distances will be rather good as well.

cheers
