VX-Freedom 4-12X40 CDS Side-focus Tri-MOA on a Wildcat?

Is this suitable on an air rifle? How close will it focus?

I just pre-ordered an FX Wildcat Compact .22. I plan to use it for pesting, squirrels, plinking, and some casual target shooting. The Wildcat is small and light, so I'd like a scope to match. I'm looking at the VX-Freedom 4-12X40 CDS Side-focus Tri-MOA (#175079)--if it will focus close enough. I've emailed Leupold and asked.

If this 4-12 doesn't work out, I'll probably go with a Leupold 3-9x33 EFR, or begin with a Clearidge I already own with similar specs.

Any thoughts welcome.

I own almost the same scope, its the 6-18X, and it focuses down to about 20 yds. I rarely shoot inside 20 yds, so it works great for 99% of my shooting. I also own the 3-9 EFR, its another great scope, but its got a simple duplex reticle, so shooting it at multiple yardages I needed to memorize approximate holdovers.

The 6-18X weighs in at 17 ounces and the 3-9 EFR is just over 9 ounces. The scope you're looking at is just over 15 ounces. Good luck with your decision! Not sure if there are better choices, but I love both my Leopold scopes: great clear glass, light weight, repeatable turrets. What more could you ask??

Mr. H, it's really interesting the you are able to focus the 6-18 down to 20 yards. Thanks to BigTinBoat pointing the specs out, I see Leupold showing the VX-Freedom 6-18X40 CDS Side Focus Tri-MOA with a "minimum parallax-free distance" of 60 yards. It makes me want to order that 4-12 and see what the real world focusing distance is.

You're so right. Leupold has a lot to offer. I do with they would cater to the air rifle crowd with a couple of their scopes.

I've had the Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40 CDS Side-focus Tri-MOA for a couple of days now. Although Leupold says it focuses down to 35 yards, I was hoping it might go closer. I wished wrong. It's obviously useable at closer distances, but not with the clarity that I like from the Leupold scopes, and I do a lot of backyard pesting at 35 yards or less.

I wish I could ship it off to the custom shop, but that's not currently an option. I will likely return it to the retailer. I hate that because it's a very nice scope that would be terrific on an air rifle.
