Thanks..
The stock 53 can be tricky to learn how to shoot but once mastered has much greater potential than say a HW45 springer. The trigger is much better and the stroke shorter and faster. You just need to learn to manage the upward nudge compared to the 2 way and slight downward nudge you get with the 45 or Webley models....Once you have practised handling the upward shunt of the 53, it is much more repeatable than what you will ever achieve with the 45 and you will half the group size.
However, this model of mine is no stock 53.
Surprisingly, the 53 in stock spec, has an almost ideal set up in cylinder diameter and stroke, despite its short internals. The cylinder diameter of an air rifle and an ideal in line TP, unlike the aforementioned pistols which have massively inefficient TPs due to 90 degree bends and the length, to get from cylinder to barrel. It means they require much bigger springs and strokes to make power... The 53 has a mere 11mm long TP directly behind the rifling and therefore a potentially much better gun.
In stock format it should make about 400 to 430fps with most pellets but i chucked out the duel mainspring and replaced with a single mainspring from a HW30. I then made up a Delrin guide rod and top hat which slips over the existing guide in favour of the inner stock spring. This outer spring can now function super smooth, with zero vibration. The guide spins on the inner guide removing all felt torque. It also gave me a good 50 fps increase in power. Reducing the TP from 4mm to 3mm reduced lost volume and gave an ideal compression ratio for much reduced recoil and greater velocity for another 20 fps Finally a slimmer piston head, in either parachute seal design or leather, returned another 40 fps rise in velocity for the 2mm gain in stroke...It was then just a case of finding the ideal pellet for the new assembly.
I can easily match a FWB 65 pistol for accuracy but obviously using a 2 hand hold versus the single hand hold of the target grip on the 65..
With a hard round nose pellet like the Falcon, i have found rats shot at 8 to 10 metres to be occasionally shot clean through the head...I do not shoot birds out of choice but solid tin cans are penetrated both sides out to 16 metres...
I have since turned my attention to a FAS 6004 finding some improvements if anyone interested
