Warranty's, Transferable Warranty's and lack thereof on Used Equipment

I see a some people posting guns and equipment in the Classifieds that of course are all USED items. Some of these are some high dollar items. Many times for just less than paid for the item. The individuals will post their original invoice to justify their selling price. Some persons like to try a gun and then pass it along. All this is fine, HOWEVER,
Buyers need to be aware that some of these items although had warranties (some out to 3 years) will not be warrantied to the next buyer whether they are 3 days or 3 months old.
This leaves the buyer with an item that was discounted a few hundred bucks which basically amounts to the buyer forfeiting a warranty for a paltry amount if all the above is considered. I just thought this needs to be mentioned for the new buyers out there to consider. ;)

So lets make a list of those Vendors who have Transferable warranties!

What a great idea. IMO any company that really stands behind their product (Leupold, Vortex) has lifetime no questions asked. I realize that not all products, especially electronic ones are able to offer lifetime warranties but to make it non transferable and terminate it prior to the original time period is a cheesy cop out and I try not to buy from the vendors who do that. A list would be great. The confusion will probably arise where a sales entity performs warranty work for the original vendor such as AOA for FX.

Personally I cant justify the expense of sending one back in ( mostly buy used anyway, but), nice to know for some people though. I know a fellow who mailed an airgun in a pelican case back to CA for repair of a fill valve 4 times & was good with that but I just couldn't. Now if I did electronic rifle I WOULD want a warranty.

What would be GREAT to know, but cant really be know right now is which airgun will never ( almost) need warranty work. My RWS Career 707II for 1999 still hold & shots like day one - okay worked the trigger slightly but that wasn't a repair. The original Spoertsm, atch rifles seemed to last a good 20 yaers before an oring went.

Naturally we cant get numbers but the lowest warranty rate would be great tp know, somehow.

The reason AOA gave me for not honoring warranties on used guns was that they couldn't know if the original owner had gone into it, voided the warranty and goofed the gun up. That would leave them in a tough spot with a subsequent owner. I'm not sure that ambiguity and overall line of thinking wouldn't also apply to the original owner though, right? So I'm also wondering if making used guns less attractive isn't a motivating factor....

Perhaps a competitor will start honoring downstream warranties, which will increase resale values on their customers' guns, attracting more business. I honestly have no idea if that would be a profitable move in the long run or not.

Here is an interesting warranty model; Crosman allows warranty repairs or replacement for a year after purchase with a receipt, or a year from date of manufacture without a receipt for air guns. Their Centerpoint scopes however have a Limited Lifetime Warranty but only for original purchaser. IMO, if a company builds a product with a certain level of quality, who has possession of the product if and when it fails due to manufacturers defect should be irrelevant. Of course I have a slanted opinion since I don't manufacture anything and am only on the consumer side. It does say a lot about the product when a company like Vortex, Leupold, or Aztec say "Our product is built so well it doesn't matter who has it when it breaks we will fix it or replace it." Or it could be more like "We build such cheap pieces of crap and mark them up exponentially so if it breaks we can afford to replace it 6 times and still have a substantial profit margin. Additionally we will charge such exorbitant shipping rates on warranty work that we are getting gonna get ours no matter what!"

You can add Athlon to the lifetime, no receipt needed list.

"Your Athlon Optics product is not only warranted to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product. Athlon will also repair or replace, at no charge to you, your product if you should damage it through normal use. No receipt needed, no registration required. This is a commitment that Athlon will be the best product you can buy for your money."
