Tuning Watch those burrs!

I had a barrel laying around I just assumed to be a dud with slugs. Tried everything, shotgun accuracy. I pushed a slug through by hand and wanted to see if anything stood out at me. Under a 30x toolmaker scope I could see some kinda chafing. Looking at the crown it looked beautiful, under the scope, I could see a micro burr on 2 lands and groove. I had to sharpen and bend a pic under the scope to find it. A little craytex and checking back and forth and its gone. And guess what? Tack driver! Whats funny its it shot pellets great and slugs were 6” group at 50 yards. Just something to watch out for if your struggling with slugs.

A six inch group at 50 yards is really bad alright. Glad you got it figured. It doesn't take much to cause slight damage to a pellet and then they just don't fly right opening up the groups. Pushing a pellet through the barrel is one of the best ways to find problems like that. I have seen some ugly ones like on my SK-19. Still it didn't shoot all that bad just some flyers now and again.

Some accuracy problems are hard to figure out good you heard the sound and understood what might cause it. The barrel in the pic shot pellets in one inch groups at seventy-five yards. Not that bad considering what it looked like. The new barrel does three quarter inch groups at the same distance so not as much improvement as I thought there would be. Maybe I need to take a closer look at my new barrel.

Stoti, I just finished a long session of slug testing with this “ new” barrel. Let me tell you this barrel is here to stay! 34.5” tj 1:26 .294/.300. I was just playing with a 35” tj but this ones more accurate now. Looks like my tune is going to stay with 61.5gr nsa @ 1020 fps. I had 4-3 shot clover leafs at 90 yards, then a 10 shot around 5/8”, then another 5 shot around .5”. The wind was pretty calm. Heres a little twist, the 44gr slugs are above the sound barrier, makes a nice crack, and still shoot an inch or better. Nice flat squirrel shooter there! I couldnt be happier, every slug I tried was minute of squirrel. And being as this is a hunting gun its perfect!
