Other Webley Tempest

I don’t know why, but I scored another Webley/Scott. A buddy out West tipped me off on another one.

These guns are infectious.
I’m amazed the condition of this honey. Couldn’t of had a lot of use. Until now.

The gentleman I bought it from I’ve talked on the horn a few times. He’s into competition pistol shooting. Already got a few tips. 👍
Love the lever to release the barrel.

Thanks. That’s got to be the most common phrase on this forum. “I wish I didn’t sell mine”.Crow
Congratulations! That's a beauty in pristine condition! Hope it shoots as well as it looks!

Thanks. It does,’m amazed. Crow
I have got two myself, and I just picked up a Hurricane. It’s addicting, the Hurricane needs a reseal, and a good cleaning.
Question, is that a rubber sleeve over the trigger?
Nice guns.
Yes it is. I’ll ask the guy I got it from, the secret behind the rubber sleeve. I’ll let you know. Crow

I've got one just like that - first spring piston for me. I enjoy plinking with it. I suppose I should try to see if I can give it a little tuneup one of these days. I've never worked on the internals of a spring piston

Thanks. Ya, I’m hooked on the workmanship on these pistols. Too bad, they should still be making them.
There is another really nice one on the Gunpost, just listed today. I think it is Gorby (New Brunswick) selling it, with a holster and Andy Davies walnut grips. Fellow Cdn. Mind you, with the current postal strike it'll be a while in transit.
I saw that one. The holster and grips are cool. The gun looks beat. It weathered a hunting lodge. Crow

They seem to have an appeal. The snub nose, compactness and well made aspects.
I've been asked to tune this gun more than any other down the years

As with all Webley it's a bit of struggle to get anywhere beyond the various trigger tune options.
This is due to the restriction of the transfer port travelling up from the cylinder and through 90 degrees and a combined length of 22mm. That's one long port and then having to pass through the the quite thick seal.
A real challenge then. At least early Webleys had straight ports cut upward at an angle but still long.

There is a way with all these pistols though. Only one way.
The 60mm volume can be increased by lengthening the stroke.
This is quite easy to do on Seniors or Premiers but the Tempest requires the piston nose machining off to remove the seal acceptance feature and then drill/ tapping to utilise a Webley MK1 seal.
The leather seal will work far nicer than the hard TEflon seal and you can gain about 2mm of stroke before running out of cocking slot..

What's really needed is for Aussie Seals to make one of their air rifle red parachute jobbiee (usually 25mm diameter plus) to fit the OEM nose instead of the crap PTFE seal. I did approach them about it.
Failing that a new nose to take an O ring.
Over compressing the mainspring with packing washers usuall just adds more recoil and heat.
Stroke increase is the key for springer pistols.

Very nice! The very 1st airgun I ever bought was a Webley Hurricane. I still have & shoot it regularly. That was 45ish years ago. They will last a lifetime if taken care of.
I almost bought a Tempest to go with it but I was a young man & they werent cheap even back then.
Thanks. They do look durable.
it’s never too late for one. Crow wrote over day ago, forgot to send.
