HW/Weihrauch Weihrauch comb fix.

Firstly, thank you Maxtrouble for gifting me a Hw30 stock. Now I have a stock that I can "fix" the comb on.

My favoite Hw30 is my first. It's a 2015 with the most boring plane jane beech stock Weihrauch has probably ever graced a Hw30 with. This rifle is my all time favorite. I have no idea how many tens of thousands of shots been through it. In all that time i never noticed the stock as uncomfortable with the peeps. Recently the weather had been lousy and when it wasn't I was busy with other rifles. All scoped. A couple weeks ago I broke out my "Baby" BB gun and noticed that I needed to tilt my head to line up the sights and it wasn't as comfortable as the scoped guns.

I've run into Weihrauch combs that were too high for irons before. My Hw95 luxus and the 77K I briefly owned were both impossible for me to use with irons. I'm not sure why Weihrauch has put scope height combs on guns with irons. I think it's terrible.

This Hw30 normally gets more use than everything else so I want it to fit me well. Sentimental value prevented me from butuchering the original stock. Today I mowed the cheek piece and comb down on my gifted stock. Now it fits me great and I can't wait to use it more. It's hard to believe I've had it for so long and it never bothered me before. Idk, maybe because of recent weight loss my face has less cushion on it🤣
That's it. And thank you again @maxtrouble.

Be well,
Ron

Looks great, glad it turned out so well. Well on your way to being a custom stock maker / modifier. Should be a very popular modification.

I need to try this peep site shooting but I am a sucker for a HW30 and a Hawke Airmax 2-7x32.

It is good to se the stock going to a project / idea and get used. The stock was going to sit in a box in my basement and collect dust. Glad it is being used and learned on.

Thank you so much. I know my talent limitations. I shouldn't be allowed to touch wood. I took it down to where it's comfortable. I was going to paint the sanded area with black stipple paint but I like it enough that I'm gonna have a friend here strip and refinish it properly. I'm shocked at how much better it feels do to shoot now. I owe you a one.

Be well
Ron

I really need to buy a second 30. The little Hawke and the peeps have been swapped too many times.

Good to hear Ron, planned weight loss is good.
I bet if I stood on your shoulders I would hit 6’4”
That's how I wound up with my two. I kept flip flopping between the Williams peeps and my 2-7x32 Airmax. I put the Airmax on my second Hw30. A grey laminate I got on sale at AoA. Love that combination too.

Looks good, Ron.
Steel wool the whole stock. Tape off the bare wood. Spray it flat black. Use Wipe on polyurethane over the whole thing.
Regular polyurethane will work just thin it 50/50.
You could lightly sand the black paint edge to smooth out the transition.
Thanks I'm gonna send it off to a friend here. He'll strip the whole thing and refinish it properly. I have a hunch he'll smooth out some of the sharp edged "Jetson's" look he doesn't care for. I trust him. All I know is it already works much better.

Looks good Ron,
You need to improvise when there’s not a great solution.
-I will be fuming my utterly plain, HW30 stock from 2016.
I already tried sanding/painting with 2 step mahogany poly …. with minimal improvement 😗.
I took almost the entire cheek piece off this morning. This is so comfortable. I'm thinking I should have did the original stock. It has more traditional lines to work with. This will always be a polished turd. But at least it will be functional. When I put the original stock on so I can use the rifle until the other is done, It felt terribly awkward. I can't believe I never noticed in all these years.

I have been trying to work up the nerve to do this. I like diopter sights but the current comb height on HW springers doesn't fly with me.
Some of the folks with the new walnut 30's are saying that they're a comfortable fit from behind peeps or iron sights.
Its making me me have a third think about it 🤔

As it happens, I received an HW30 wally two days ago. The stock is just fine with peeps or the factory opens. I am very happy to see Weihrauch pulled the corporate head out. I have an older R7 running peeps so I put a Airmax 2-7X30 on it with low mounts. I do have to say this had the worst Rekord on record....but that is easily rectified.

Now, if we could just get them to do the same across the product range
(to the stock, not the trigger).

A walnut 50s in .20 would be heaven!

I never really had a terrible problem shooting the 30s unscoped. I have guns with last two generations of beech stocks. I just didn't realize how much I was tilting my head to get on them. With this comb lowered I realized how much more comfortable it could be.
My modern 95L and 77K were basically unusable with irons for me. The price of the walnut upgrade is worth it to me if it's truly comfortable with irons. They're such great guns that you really need one unscoped to get the most fun out of them. I have both scoped and peeps. I love them both but the peeps is the most fun. Ymmv

The last time I looked through "target" peeps I couldn't see very well at all.
As my eyes are at the moment I have an edge distortion like a mirage or like heat off of asphalt. If I use a large enough iris I can see through it. With a small iris I'm forced to look through the distortion and it's very dark. Even in bright sunlight.

Sorry to hear that. You might be a candidate for eye surgery. A few people here have had that don't with remarkable results.

I'm contemplating lasic myself. It's annoying to shoot with glasses so I often adjust the scopes to my bare eye. It still sucks because it seems like everytime I pick up a rifle the scope is never left where I need it at the moment. Plus without glasses I can't work on the rifle as I shoot.

Getting old sucks. Its better than not getting old.

Be well,
Ron

I just had my left eye lens replaced on the 3rd and the right on the 13th to fix cataracts and a slight astigmatism. Boy the world is a lot brighter and my distance vision is noticeably clearer too. I still can't see open sights too well, but I've been dealing with that for a few years now. I still need reading glasses and for working on things up close, but I'm happy so far. I do have a slight "blinder" on the edges of my vision, but they say that will go away over the next few weeks. I never thought I'd think of myself as old, but I guess I'm there! :)
