I just finished tuning a new HW80. It required three tear downs and I shot 16 test targets across the chrono, shooting two 10 shot groups on each target, using five different pellet combinations. After inserting the VORTEK PG4 Steel HO kit, it was obvious that even though it shot with less harshness and "buzz" it was too powerful, producing nearly 20 FPE. I tore it down, and took 1 1/2 coils off and reassembled and retested. I knew it could do better, and after doing thirty or forty spring tunes to date, I suspected accuracy sweet spot would be between 14 and 16 fpe. with 1 1/2 coils off, it was shooting around 17 fpe.
I tore the rifle down once more, and removed another 1/2 coil and the rifle came totally into its own with the H&N Field Target Trophy 11.42 grain pellet, right within the anticipated perfect power range. Based upon target #15 as shown below, I declaring the tune objectives to be met.
