Tuning Weird FX Maverick ?

I will try to explain this best I can as I don’t think this is usual. I have a 25 Maverick compact. I currently run the second reg about 100 bar. The first reg was around 135-140 but I bumped it a little but not sure exactly. Anyway, I tuned the gun at 100 bar on PW 7 to get the max speed for 25.39 with the internal adjuster. I then turned the internal screw down just a touch when I found this point. Now that puts me around 900-912 fps very consistently. I also have a digital gauge on my gun. I notice if I shoot power wheel 7 that reg recovers right near that 100 bar every time. Now the weird part. Drop to PW 5 and as I shoot and watch the digital gauge the plenum starts to fill to a lower pressure than pw 7 and where it was set to begin with. It will start filling to 97 bar. Extreme spread suffers on 5 but most shots stay 860’s -870 some in the 880’s. However it will inevitably shoot a dud somewhere in the string like clock work. It will be like 840 or 830. When this happens the plenum pressure doesn’t even recover to 97. It might be like 95 bar. Then the gun will fire one or two additional low power shots, seemingly until enough air is taken out of the plenum that it recharges properly. It’s weird. Basically as you strike the valve with less power the plenum fills to a lower pressure. I don’t think this is usual. I’m curious who makes a better reg than these stupid amp regs for a Maverick as it seems a reg issue. Oh, and I am waiting a long time between shots to ensure replenish time. I guess does anyone else with a digital gauge on their Maverick notice this trend at lower power wheel settings?

I'd check your washer stack, it should be .48 average which should give you a range of 75-125 bar, so 100 bar is in the sweet spot. If you need Belleville's, McMaster-Carr has them in bags of 10, get at least 10 bags.
.25 VP, Huma slug probe, barrel on Pellet, #2 is 125.2.
On my .25 VP, I can go from 33.95gr to 25.39 just pumping them out.

Nice. Yeah mine seems to function well only at PW 7 at the max output of whatever the chosen reg pressure is. Maybe I will try to target same velocity with a higher reg pressure and see how that performs. Always worth a shot. Push comes to shove I may just look into replacing reg with a huma or similar before I go tearing into the amp reg. Thank you for the insight. Yours sounds like it is running sweet.

I find that the Huma regs are better in terms of refresh rate. The AMP reg in my wildcat BT took forever to settle. It started out as a frustrating issue for long range stuff and I relegated it for use as a short range plainer/pester in my yard. Sometime over the course of a couple thousand shots, it settled down and now behaves perfectly. Probably my most solid FX in that sense. My 2 Pantheras drive me nuts with slow refresh and creep and I hope they settle. You can’t help but watch the Panthera gauge since it’s right in front of your face and if it’s also digital, it’s easy to get a case of reg OCD. Perhaps that’s why guns used to ship with those 1/4 circle gauges where you wouldn’t even notice the needle move from a shot. “See no evil”😯
I don’t know if there’s anything out there with an electronic reg yet, but surely that’s the next step. To ditch the mechanical in favor of a digital gauge that communicates with an electronic valve between the bottle and plenum. Especially if it had the capability to vent 5bar of overnight creep so my FX doesn’t need to be dry fired 3X before taking on a “job” after sitting for a day or two.

I hear you. I def find that after sitting for a few days there are def several shots you might as well throw out before doing any serious shooting. Kind of seems that way after making any adjustment too. Takes a bit to settle where it’s going to be. I dunno I do like the ability to tinker I guess. It really helps you learn how an airgun works and responds to inputs and the environment. However it doesn’t shoot any better than my old streamline. Quite frankly I think this whole dual reg is marketing 💩 to get into our pockets and nothing more. I actually feel the same way about the smooth twist stuff. Beginning to understand some of the flack this company gets.

How many shots do you have through that reg?
I bought it second hand. It seemed a little better when it was cold out. The reg is def very temp sensitive. When it cools the reg lets in more air. Will climb 4 bar or so when it is cold outside compared to when the gun is room temp. It also creeps 4 bar or so when left sitting. Maintains while shooting. Nothing exceptional so far. My cheaper single regged guns perform just as well.

Could have been misused by a previous owner. As in, adjusted down while under pressure. You can give them a service or just get a Huma. This is (IMHO) the best video guide to follow to polish the faces and washers:

Often they just come out with the reg body, but you can grab the sides of the piston with needle nosed pliers- just put some electrical tape on them to prevent any gouging of the metal.

Makes sure you get the microfiber cloths to polish - don’t use sand/emery paper! Amazon sells a little pack with different grits - 3M Tri-M-ITE
Thank you very much

Update. I took apart the hammer spring/power wheel and cleaned everything. Readjusted the pellet probe which I think was some of. I made it a little more forward in the hole like the fx video said. I don’t think it’s a reg issue. Before I did all this I even opened up 2nd reg to bypass and just ran off the first reg and it did the same thing. Currently it is running a lot better but it will throw one or two odd balls each mag still. Not as odd as before but not where it was when I got it. One other thing I noticed was when I was adjusting the probe position I had the cheek piece off so I could watch it. Shooting like that I felt air every shot from the breech. Not a ton but a def puff. Is that normal? I’m thinking of changing the breech oring next.

It could be the large set screw, plug , that's behind the barrel set screw. I use Teflon tape on mine to seal it up. Did you have your barrel off recently ? The tissue test might help find where the air is coming from.
+1 on taping that screw, plus it’s easy to gouge an oring inserting the barrel into the block
