Taipan Well, I've gone and done it...

Well, I've gone and done it...
As much as I love my Taipan Veteran Long, I've always thought it's a bit too long especially since I have it tuned to only around 31 FPE. I do love the shot count, but as a standby varmint rifle I rarely needed that many shots at a time. As a backyard rifle though shooting out of the window most of the time (sometimes at odd angles), the length is a big deal. I've slogged through deciding on the length when I bought the Long and years later I'm still thinking about it. I figured if I'm going to get the standard length, now is the time since they're getting harder to find. I don't know but this Talon Tunes restock last month might be one of the last ones they get. The red stock is not my first choice, but it's the only one left and I'm putting it on the tactical stock anyways.

Of course I get it in my favorite caliber .22 so now I don't know if I'm keeping the Long version or selling it. 😅

Or just look for a standard barrel for sale in the classified.

I received my new gun a couple of days ago. It's tuning time! As you know, this gun is a huge pain in the ass to tune due to the regulator being inside the air cylinder. At least this time, I have a good idea of where the regulator should be set at. What I like about it though is once it's tuned, it never deviates from it unless I intentionally change it.

With my 30 FPE tune with the JSB Hades, I'm estimating between 60 and 70 shots on the reg. The Long version shows its efficiency in this regard because with that gun, I get 95 shots on the reg with the same tune.

Interested in how you make out. Just got a tactical 25-700 from Tony and everything looks good so far at short range with 34.9 nsa going 950 fps.
If your gun is already shooting the way you like it with the projectiles you like shooting, just save the effort and just keep shooting the gun as is. You can just fine tune the hammer spring tension to tighten up your shot strings. In my experience however, these guns come almost maxed out from the factory and much too hot for my main Hades projectiles. My particular gun came shooting the Hades at 985 FPS. I only did a 10 shot string over the chronograph with the stock settings but from what I saw though, I estimate 38 shots on the reg with everything stock. The factory regulator on mine is set at 135 bars.

I think Tony has really upped his game on the extra services when you purchase the gun from him. With my new gun, he polished the crown to mirror finish. He also said that he looked at the trigger. I don't know if he adjusted it but it's much lighter than the stock trigger on the Long when I first got it. I also like the little touches such as my name on the printed test sheet that he does and the work mat that he included. I didn't get any of those extras when I purchased my Veteran Long a while back.

I will say however that he needs to be better at communications. I've asked him simple questions on text or email in regards to purchases that I've made or potential purchases, and although he answers, most of my questions just gets ignored. He's a bit hard to talk to when I'm trying to get some specific information about a particular gun that I'm looking to buy.

I'm gonna assume you should be real close there. Based on my notes from my old Long I got 104 shots total (85 on reg 19 off within 20fps) at 945fps with 16gr pellets. My Short was 45 shots on reg at 900fps with 16gr. So you might be close to 70-80 at that 30fpe range.

What LDC do you have on it? It looks nice but not sure I've seen one like that before.

That one is the DonnyFL Ryu. I really like the look of just the moderator directly on the barrel rather than attached to the barrel shroud. I will say though that it's obviously not as quiet with just the moderator compared to the shroud plus moderator.

Ok, I just finished tuning and zeroing the gun. I ended up with 920 FPS for the Hades and 790 FPS for the H&N 21gr Slug HP. With the regulator set to 95 bars, the gun gets 60 shots on the reg from the full 250 bar fill.

The gun actually could have gotten closer to 70 shots on the reg per fill if I only tuned it for the Hades with the same 920 FPS. With that tune however, the H&N slugs were shooting too slow and didn't group well. I merely increased the hammer spring tension and because the Hades stayed at the same 920 FPS, this tells me that I'm wasting a bit of air when shooting the Hades. It's a compromise I'm willing to take so that I can interchange into the H&N slugs without having to touch the tune.

Well dammit... I've gone and done it again! Same gun but in .25 this time. I've been thinking about this for weeks and I see the price dropped some more in the past few weeks. What really pushed me over the edge this time is I was just in an email conversation with Taipan and he said that these last pieces of Veteran 1's that Tony got from them are all definitely all CZ barrels without a choke.

Now I don't know if I should get excited hearing these barrels don't have a choke because my experiences with the slugs have been less than stellar so far. The .22 that I bought a few months back is supposedly included in this no choke CZ barrel. I tuned it for the 15.89gr Hades and none of the slugs I've tried were any good. Maybe it will do better if I tuned it specifically for the slugs but being a suburban varmint rifle I'm not willing to tune the .22 gun for too much power. It is spot on with the Hades however.

With this new .25 gun, I'm not concerned with limiting its power as I plan to use this in more open areas. From what I'm reading though from other people's experiences with FPE vs shot count, I'll probably tune it around 55 FPE for around 30 to 35 shots. If it likes any slugs in that tune, great, but if not, I will just keep shooting pellets with it.

I also bought the Tactical stock with it so it will look exactly like my .22

I've had a Veteran OG for 4 years now and there's still no other rifle I'd rather own. It's not perfect for sure but for my needs, it's just about as perfect as a rifle can be for me. With the stocks running really low on brand new previous models, I just don't think I can wait on these any longer and later regret not getting one when I can.

I've also seriously considered the Veteran 2's (almost pulled the trigger a few times on the Tactical in 550mm barrel), but there's just something I really like about the older models.

If you are going to try slugs from the .22 taipan it will shoot them.. but only in .216 as close to 18gr like the nsa 17.5gr In . 216 my recent mutant standard do great with those, and is a really tight choke barrel..

I just took my Taipan long and my new to me Taipan Vetran tactical 700mm 2 out to shoot at 100 yds last week. The Vet 2 was shooting JSB KO slugs at 943 fps and the Vet long was shooting AA 25.4 gr pellets at 904 fps. Both guns are in 25 caliber. I could have tuned the Vet 2 for AVS or Javelin slugs since they were grouping good. But I went with the JSB's simply because I got some with the gun when I bought it used.

In the Vet 2 the JSB MK 2 33 grain pellets grouped exceptional. I'm seriously considering getting a standard Vet 2 also. Really liking the new cocking lever on the new version.

That's 4 shots with the long at 100 and 7 shots with the Vet 2 at 100. I was mainly shoot spinning targets that day.

I got the last. 25 standard tactical gen 1 .. to go with the mutant standard I purchased last month and what a shooter it is .. if the tactical stock fit the mutant , I might buy the tactical stock for it .. at those prices really hard to ignore them ..
Now seems to be a great time to buy the OG Veterans. They're coming down in prices and stocks are running low. Seems like at the only ones left with both Talon Tunes and Balistas are red laminate stocks, which I'm not a big fan of. It's ok though because I really like the Tactical stocks and I still have a spare green laminate stock. Talon Tunes just ran out of the Tactical stocks but Balistas is showing they still have a number of them. I wonder if Talon Tunes will get anymore shipments of the Tactical stocks.

By the way, what was the stock tune that your .25 came in? Did you change it and if so, what FPE are you shooting it at? And also, what shot count are you getting? I plan to tune the .25 at around 52 FPE. From people's comments int he past, I should be looking at around 35 shots on a full 250 bar fill.

I also bought the HumaAir regulator with it because my .22 has the same. With the .25 though, I'm not planning on immediately replacing the regulator especially since the spacer that comes with the HumaAir regulators are so out of spec lengthwise. I only have a Dremel and it was a huge pain grinding the spacer down to the proper size.

Mine still have not arrived...TT shipped las Friday is supposed to be here by Wednesday next week.. but I managed to find a plenum for it .. that should to be arriving next week . That definitely help me with the tune ... I also by luck have a TJ 1-22 twist 15mm thick that will have it machine for it .. it should end being a really good pellet shooter..
