HW/Weihrauch WH30s Useful Range

I have a new WH 30s. I bought it mostly for plinking. I will do some but limited target shooing - not competition. What's the longest range this rifle is still accurate? I am aware that it is one of the lowest FPS at the muzzle of all WH Springers and I am good with that. Thanks! Oh yeah, using JSB Match Diabolo EXACT .177 cal, 7.33 grain.

Assuming that you mean the hw30 with JSB 7.33s, you can probably reliably hit targets out to 60-70 yards. Maybe even farther out, but the kinetic energy falls to about 3fpe as you approach 70 yards.

Yes, sorry, I did mean the WH 30s and on the pellets: JSB EXACT Diabolo .177 cal, 7.33 grain. I am old and my weakness is my old eyes so if I can hit reasonable targets at 50 yards I will be pleased! Very pleased! I have a lot to learn about shooting technique.

An HW30 doesn't require much in the way of technique for reasonable accuracy. Much of any air movement will play havoc with light pellets at 50y. Keep that in mind
If I have time to go shoot some but it's a bit windy can my HW 30s handle a slightly heavier pellet or does the small .177 cal of the rifle limit the pellet grain weight so much it just can't shoot distances in the wind? Say I had some 8.4 (I think there's a .17 cal pellet with that grain weight) would that small increase in pellet grain weight be obvious in accuracy? Thanks for the help!

Will be better but it doesn't take much wind to move a 177 pellet at 50y

This is regular results at 50 yards with my HW30S .177.

What a range! There's nothing even close to that anywhere near where I live. I have only had my WH30 about a week but I too was trying to find out how accurate it is at distance and the consensus is on a calm day somewhere between 50 yards and 70 yards. 50 yards is good for me!

I have the Vortek kit in my HW30 and puts out a blistering 7 fpe with the H&N FTT 8.64 453 head size pellets. I like shooting them in my HW30, they fit much tighter and group better at 55 yards.

The trick (and fun) to each springer is to find the "Magic Pellet". Try the Crosman 7.9's, the JSB / Air Arms 8.4's or the H&N Field Target Trophies. They offer different head sizes from 4.50 to 4.54's. It is a rough job, but someone has to do it 😀

The HW30 is a great rifle. Crosman has some great reactive targets that would be perfect. Also, building a gallery is another fun rabbit hole. Buy a target every time you order pellets!

Depends on your definition of accuracy. Wind is your biggest enemy. When the wind is down I can easily hit a beer can repeatedly at 100 yards with my scoped 30. It's a hoot. You pull the trigger and it takes the pellet a while to get there. You see the can move and a little while later you here tink. Absolutely no real world application but it's a lot of fun.

I'll sometimes step up to a JSB 8.44 from a 7.33 JSB. I believe the 8.44s have a better BC.

I’ve had good success with the JSB 8.44 but I find many of the skirts are oblong. I’ve read somewhere else it’s due to softer lead and shipping. Do you sort your pellets?

I don't get many damaged skirts on 177 JSBs. On 22 JSBs I have. JSB uses a softer lead than most but I have very good success with them in 177 Weihrauchs. Crosman is the other end of the hardness scale. They use a lot of antimony for a harder lead. You'll get less damaged pellets but they're QC is spotty and they eventually foul the barrel. Perhaps it's who you get your JSBs from. Some places pack them like eggs, others like rocks.

I never sort pellets by size or weight. Life's to short to sort pellets for recreational shooting. I shoot them straight in from the tin. When shooting for groups I'll occasionally get one that's dented or fits much tighter or looser than the rest. I'll just shoot it at a spinner off to the side and go back to the group on the next shot.

Thanks, yes I originally had a Hawke Vantage 2-7x30 but when I realized this little gun shoots 50 yards pretty well I replaced it with the Hawke AIRMAX 4-16x40 just over a week ago.
I'd hang on to that Vantage. It's a great little scope for that gun. It well suits the Hw30's size and typical use. Shooting groups at 50 yards is not typical Hw30 use 😆. You may revert to it once you get the 97 set up.

Almost all my springers have Airmax scopes. The fine etched glass Christmas tree reticle is great for target and long distance shooting. I have a 2-7 Airmax on my Hw30. I have a 4-12 Airmax on my Hw97. All the others except my Hw50 wear a 3-9 Airmax. The Hw50 is my squirrel and GP air rifle. It wears a straight 4X non AO mildot Vantage. The thicker Vantage reticle shows better in the woods.
