What a monster

I bought the used Kalibrgun Ocelot from Airguns of Arizona a coupla weeks back. Since I started on this airgun track a little over a year back, I've liked the look of this gun. And I wanted to give the near vertical grip a try too. So far, with a few gripes, I like it. The gripes are some of the shapes in the grip that will be fixed tomorrow.

This thing is huge. Small to average sized hands will have a hard time getting a good grasp on the grip. The combination of the air tank and the shrouded barrel are oversized as compared to most when stacked one above the other.

It supposedly weighs a little over 3 pounds, it's all in the barrel and air tank. Pretty nose heavy. Like the AP16 the gun is a bit on the loud side. It needs a silencer of some sort. The barrel nut comes out, so some sort of adapter can be made if nothing else fits. I'll need to get another Huma silencer, like is on my AP16.

The trigger is VERY nice. Uncocked, the trigger movement is very smooth to the second stage wall, then a very short movement after the wall. I only powered up up once to feel the trigger, not much difference cocked vs not cocked. The cocked trigger now has a very short first stage, about 1/4 the uncocked movement. The first stage movement is very smooth to the wall which is firm / solid. Then the let-off is quick and clean, with no creap, nothing but a smooth movement, with little a movement after the let-off. Very close to one of the best triggers that I've squeezed.

Like most full gripped guns, I need to do some "fitting" of the grip to my hand. Not to really make it smaller, but to get rid of some odd lumps and bumps that I don't know why they did that. The cutout for the index finger goes "up", to point your finger...above the trigger !? I can fix that too.

I don't see many folks using this gun, not sure why, but it seems pretty simple and easy to use. I'll see in the coming days.

One reason I can guess, the PP-700 is near identical and a tack driver at < 200 usd.

Identical how ? Surly not in looks. Not even close ! Yea, they both have the prerequisite triggers, barrels, grips and air tanks...

And do you know exactly how well this particular gun shoots ? Was / is your shooting off the support of a bench and other crutches...not impressed if it was.

You’re forgetting a few other MAJOR similarities with the pp700. Both are single shot, swing loading breech and single action revolver style hammer. Other than having a different grip, trigger guard, and perhaps trigger mechanism; they are VERY similar pistols. Similar enough that the Ocelot never became popular because you can either have a pp700 for 1/5 the price or get an AP16 for the same price. Granted the Ocelot probably has better build quality, it’s not enough to compete against the pp700, AP16, or HW44 regarding sales.

I got it for just over half price. That makes it a good buy in my...proverbial book. And per Odoyle, it even came with a grip.

Better look up the word "similar" in the dictionary. Seems by your meaning, ALL guns are similar then, right ? I just see things a little deeper than you apparently do. Much more than just the surface.

Don't worry,be happy;with what you have.I have a Brocock pistol,I am happy with it;Fact, I want the newer model!

People will tell you that you could of got this or that, saved money and have a pistol just as accurate....They are right,so what? Are you happy with what you have, that is what counts.

Yes sir, agreed. Just because people / person had a bad experience with something, doesn't make them all bad. And because it's not a multi-shot...who cares, Seems I may have known that going in. I have a Beeman P1, HW45, Sig Sauer ASP (single shot), and a couple others.

And yes again, even though this thing is a tank, it's built VERY well. The machined parts fit well, without add gaps or uneven steps from bad design. Neither the trigger or the hammer are sloppy in their fit, the breach block is also a very nice fit, rotates snuggly, without being too tight or loose.

I just got done with modifying the grip to get rid of the "corners" in the grip. It had radiused corners rather than a full radius to wrap your fingers around. Also made room for my trigger finger to fit better, aimed at the trigger, rather than above it. And a little more room for my thumb muscle.

Filled with air, mounted a marginal red dot sight, now to do some shooting...here goes nuthin (yeah, yeah...I know !).

Mike,

I'm glad you were able to get a good pistol!! 👍🏼

I'm interested in the performance you'll be getting (power, shot count, and of course, precision — rested and offhand). 👍🏼

I have a PP700, and it came to me as a gift from God, and I mean that almost literally. 😊

Now, after adding a $100 regulator, a $150 silencer, and a $250 scope & rings combo, I'm already out of more money than you are for your pistol (remember, I didn't have to pay for the pistol)! So, you've got a great pistol with great quality (that beats mine by a mile and a half)! 👍🏼

🔶 Like some other say here, let no-one spoil your purchases — enjoy what you got. ➔ And boy do I enjoy it!! 😄 I helped hundreds and hundreds of pigeons enter that blissfull Neverland (or wherever pigeons go after getting punctured by 14 grains of lead), and that's in just that one year since this gun sailed from heaven to my doorstep.

I'm so very grateful that I was blessed by both the gift and the money for the accessories! 😊

Happy pistol shooting all around!

Matthias

Matthias,

I have heard of people having a crappy reg in their pp700’s, not much of a surprise considering its a $200 gun. Heard of guys polishing the Belleville’s to remedy that, but a Huma is a better(easier) fix. The only thing I had to do to mine was buy a new barrel($45) that had a better crown and is polished. The crown and leade on the stock barrel was ROUGH. Also, I had to drill and tap two holes to hold the plastic nut that holds the breech end of the barrel.
The scope and moderator you mentioned aren’t required to make the gun shoot better. One makes YOU shoot better and the other keeps your neighbors happy. I’m assuming the Ocelot doesn’t have baffles in the shroud either and also doesn’t come with a scope or rings.

AirNgasman,

Great read and very informative comparison of the pp700 vs Ocelot

legionair,

ouch, that's not a cheap barrel considering it's just a metalified straw...!

Of course, you're right about scope and silencer not being integral to the gun. 👍🏼 It's just that this particular setup is what my shooting scenarios call for, not the gun. 👍🏼

🔶The endless-rotating barrel, yeah, you did the right thing, you have the right skills and tools. No tap-and-die in my tool box nor my skill set. I squeezed a piece of thin fishing line between barrel and action which creates enough friction so that the barrel does not rotate when I attach the silencer.

🔸 Please, do tell me if that might mess things up!!

🔶I worked on the crown. I think I got it to shoot better.

❌ Please, teach me about the leade. What do I need to do there, and how? ❓

THANKS, legionair! 😊

Matthias

I’m sure it’s worth the money and probably better build quality than a pp700. No doubt you’ll have fun shooting it. You said you don’t see why many folks use the pistol and I gave you a reason. If you want to believe that it’s a one of a kind pistol that’s cool.. my kid still believes in Santa

Now there's a backhanded compliment if I ever saw one, with carbon fiber knuckles too..!

Well, being an Aerospace, Sr. Test Engineer most of my adult life, I think I have a pretty good idea what it takes, design, build wise to make a good part. After all, I've built...well I can't say that...but suffice to say, you can thank me, and my work cohorts for our work..! I've seen "current", so called high end guns that don't have the "fit and finish" that this gun has. I'm just going to let the gun itself prove me wrong...if it wants to.

So, that said, I did a little shooting today with this "hammer". After all, that's sort of what it looks like. Then I put some air into my AP16, so they both had about 200 bar in them. Same pellets, 14gr. Benjamin Discovery, same miniscule 17ish yard distance. Same off handed shooting. Though the AP19 has a much better red dot sight on it, the Hammer (Ocelot) held its own fairly well. Its hole pattern is a little larger than the AP16's, but not overly so. I'll bet with a better (smaller, more round and not fuzzy) dot, they will be somewhat comparable. I'll get to ordering a better sight, and get myself more used to the heavier weight of the Ocelot (hammer), and shoot both guns, side by side again. Although, that's not my intent, to compare one gun against the other, so much than to just have fun hitting a target well.

As for answering Jungle - I don't have a chronograph, so pellet speed check is out. I can check to see how well the air chamber does as far as pellet count. And I don't do "rested" shooting. To me that makes no sense. It didn't when I was shooting powder fired weapons most every weekend for six or seven years, and it doesn't now. I like to see how well "I" can control the gun, not how well a table and sand bags / bipods can control the gun.

This is all pretty of funny. I never have been much of a "follow the crowd type person". I guess this particular gun purchase proves, that even in my old age, I'm still not. My old girlfriend will get a kick out of all of this hating, from buying such an unpopular gun when I tell her.

Bitch on ladies.

Matthias,

The stock barrels sell for $17. Wes(Airgunarchery.ca) sends the stock barrels to a machinist to be crowned and polished bringing it to $37+ship. Which is a bargain compared to what other people charge to crown and polish a barrel. Hole in hole accuracy now.
I don’t think the fishing line will mess you up I’ve heard of guys doing that. Some guys crazy glued it. The drilling and tapping sounds like it requires skill but it really doesn’t. You can do it with a drill and get a cheap tap and die set from Harbor Freight
I’ve never done a leade so I’m the wrong person to ask. Hence the reason why I bought a professionally done barrel🙂

legionair,

thanks! 😊 Yeah, that's sounds like a deal, 20$ + S/H to get your barrel up to par.

I should have know about that option when I ordered mine from Wes....

Well, I think I need to continue to expand my skill set. The tap and die set, I'm considering it...! 😄 And the leade, I guess I'll see what google brings up.

Ocelot is a great gun! Hopefully I can snag one soon. But dude, how is that not impressive lol
